Yet another - Jeff Beck tone?

For the first time in a long time, I find myself wanting someone else's "tone".
I suppose, if I have to, Jeff Beck is a good pick.

Anyway, this is off the Jeff Beck album - "Who Else"
The song is called "Angel (Footsteps)"

Here's a short segment from the middle, in case you aren't familiar with it:

Jeff Beck - Angel (Footsteps) - segment

Any ideas on how to get this great tone? Thanks all.

Jeff Beck just blows me away!! His playing is so beautiful, His imagination is his creativity. Good Luck!!

Re: Yet another - Jeff Beck tone?

Jeff Beck is my favorite guitarist, yet I have yet to learn one of his songs! I'm not sure how to get his tone, probably...steal his brain.

Man, have you picked a tough one. Any Beck tone is a bitch to hunt down, and that one is a pretty stylized example.

First up, throw away your pick. That's the most important thing.

Then grab a strat, string it with 11s, set the vibrato so it floats for up-pull, and plug it into a recent Marshall, a DSL or TSL, I'm not sure which.

Then, crank the tops, mids, bottom and master on the amp and roll back the volume and tone on your guitar. Beck almost never plays with his guitar volume and tone knobs full-out.

Sounds to me like like the tone knob is right back on this tune.

best of luck...

Ok . . . I can throw away my pick . . . after that . . . I'm screwed! :laugh2:

And it was such a beautiful tone.

Re: Yet another - Jeff Beck tone?

I have that CD... you're right that tone is immaculate and Becks technique makes it sound totally unique and beautifully strange.

He mentioned on that record he mainly used a Marshall DSL100 head and his green "Little Richard" strat at VERY high volume and often times the tone had massive EQ on it.

Personally I think if you ditch your pick, and dig in with the fleshy part of your index or thumb that'll get you halfway there.

Re: Yet another - Jeff Beck tone?

Beautifully strange--That's a good way to put it. He's so non-conventional in his phrasing.

Beck and Gilmour are two to study for sure!

Re: Yet another - Jeff Beck tone?

Yeah I'd play more Beck licks if i could figure out how the hell he does it LOL

Re: Yet another - Jeff Beck tone?

Sounds like a bridge single-coil with the tone rolled back...you're on your own with da chops! :laugh2:

Re: Yet another - Jeff Beck tone?

Well, I've got the first half of the song down pretty good. I'll keep working on the rest.

I've got the "tone" in the ballpark, (sorta like how a Big Mac is in the "ballpark" for beef), but the one thing I can't nail, is that loooonnng sustain he gets. Like on the very first note he hits.

I've got compressors coming out the wazoo, and with them all turned on, and at max, I can't get my axe to hold a note for that long. :smack:
I wonder if he has the signal super-boosted, then extreme compression/limiting dialed in, so that there's more of a curve to deal with there. I tend to play a bit softer.

I'll keep working on it. Now, if there was just some way to get that backing track, without him in it.

artietoo,

Are you trying this on a guitar with a whammy bar(remember the gear I PM'ed you about)...if so switch to a hardtail guitar!

Good Luck
