Yet another pot and cap question

OK guys, I can't take the JB anymore. The thing is so bright it feels like an ice pick going into my temple :argh:

I just ordered a PATB1 ($54.00 close out from music123). That should bring this thing back into line. I haven't decided if I like the duck and SVR in the mid and neck yet.

What pots and cap do you think would be best? I have 250k's and a .022 now.

Strat, basswood, rosewood, FR trem, metal & rock.

i would try the 250k you have in there first. if you need more high end, swap in a 500k. a 0.022 cap is a good value

I'm with Jeremy on this one. The pots and caps you have should be just fine.

Hahahaha, I'm outta green backs.

I'ts amazing how good the jb sounds in the jackson and how crappy in the strat.

Maybe that's why I'm so fond of the JB. It sounds great in my Jackson. Maybe I should swap it out with the Custom Custom in my Peavey just to see if I like it that way.

Well, since I'm contemplating swapping out the CC in the PV, I might stick it in the Jackson (if I ever manage to find those dirty lemurs :banghead: ) and see what it sounds like. If I do, I'll give you a full report.

Jeremy mentioned the cure for the JB: 250K pots.

That's the way I'd go before swapping out the pickup for a differant model.

Seymour uses the JB in a Tele...but with 250K pots.

Personally, I find that using 250K pots produces a darker tone than I prefer...but if that's what you're after from a JB ( a darker, less piercing tone) that's the cure.

I just don't hear this ice pickyness from the JB. Maybe it's my high end hearing loss, I dunno. I love the JB in my strat (strat-style anyway). It's an alder body, mated with a Jazz, 500K volume and tone, .047uf tone cap. What I'm curious is from those who say this about the JB, what's the treble and presence setting on your amp? If they're dimed or above 7, that's why. Set the treble between 4 and 6, presence between 2 and 4. Adjust bass and mids to taste.

As for the CC, it sounds good in a strat, it sounds good in a maple bodied Kramer, it sounds good in a Les Paul. It sounds good in everything I've put it in so far. I can't put my Les Paul down. Listen to early Great White (Shot in the Dark, Once Bitten), that's how it sounds now. :32:

I don't hear the JB as having more actual highs or upper harmonics than other pickups...that's NOT what makes it so penetrating. That penetrating tone that some players find troublesome seems to come more from the focused upper midrange or lower treble frequencies, IMO. To me, calling that quality "to bright" is not quite a correct description because "bright" to me means more sparkle or more upper harmonics or more actual highs. But played loudly and when standing close to my speakers, the JB hurts my ears eventually more than some other pickups do. It has a penetrating quality to it that really cuts through and it's a bit to much for some ears. That said, the JB is Duncan's #1 selling bridge humbucker...year after year after year.

Years and years ago, I decided to get a JB for a Strat I had. The first tech I brought it to replaced with (I assume) a 500K pot to "open it up" (his quote) along with installing the pup. I HATED it. Very icepicky. That shop closed down and the guitar sat for awhile cos I just couldn't deal with the highs.

Eventually I was talking to another tech about putting a Custom or 59 in it, and when he took it apart he said he would try a different pot/cap or suttin (I know little about electronics now, close to nothing then). I said, "OK". Man did that guitar sound sweet afterwards. And since then I had the JB in a few different strats and super strats...I always took it back to that guy and said, "I want a JB in this "X" but I don't want those shrieky highs" and knowing what (little) I know now, I suspect if the guitars needed it he replaced the pots to 250K, cos I never experienced that shriekyness again with the JB (barring in a Les Paul)

EDIT: And yes, it's not the treble or presence of the pickup as LEw said..its the very penetrating high mids....great for cutting through the mix, but gawd it's too much in some guitars

Lew, the guitar has 250k pots in it already. I had 500k in it, the 250's did warm it up a bit, just not enough for my liking.

Eric the amp is set correctly, even within those specs.

My jackson Soloist has a JB pickup in it and with the same exact amp settings it sounds great. It's definitely the guitar.

hey sid in in a similar situation and looking at the cc also...one thing that suprised me though...wouldnt sid enjoy the feel of an ice pick going throught his temple?
