YIKES ... '63 Bassman

Re: YIKES ... '63 Bassman

Cool amp but thats not thte original or matching cab...

The blond 1x15 cabs like that go to a blond Showman.

HOWEVER that rig...a blond Bassman and a Blond 1x15 Showman cab is what GE Smith used for YEARS and sounded killer!

I just hate the idea of a long term impedence mismatch.

Re: YIKES ... '63 Bassman

Now you see why I am having a hard time writing off a Blonde Tremolux for a Brown Super! Blonde Fenders are sexy!

Re: YIKES ... '63 Bassman

TGWIF is correct that the cab is a Showman 1x15. It was common in those days to use the Showman cab with the Bassman head. It was also common to replace the Jensen spkr with JBL because of its higher efficiency (made the amp sound much cleaner and louder). But if I remember correctly, the D130 was available in 8 ohms. There may have been 16 ohm D130s then, but they would have been very rare and wouldn't have been an original option by Fender. I suspect that the spkr was replaced much later than '63 by the user.

Re: YIKES ... '63 Bassman

One other thing....the plastic dogbone handle was not original equipment. Fender used the leather with the chrome end covers. You can see evidence of that handle on the spkr cab. Also you can see, by the screw holes, that the original handle was at one time replaced with a dogbone and then removed.

And since you cannot see any evidence of the original handle ends on the top of the amp, then you must conclude that the top tolex piece is also not original.

I am certainly not an expert on vintage amps, but I did live in this era and owned two early Fender amps (one was a '62 small vibrato combo, don't recall the model, and one was a '66 Bandmaster which had the same hardware as the Bassman).
