YJM Fury Pickup Heights

Got a set of these a couple of weeks ago, and I'm really loving them so far! They sound great, but I'm having a little trouble getting the pickup heights right. I mostly do this kind of thing by ear, but this time my ears don't seem to be getting me at that sweet spot no matter how much time I spend adjusting. Can anybody who has a set of these make a quick measurement and tell me what their heights are? Also if anybody from Seymour Duncan can let me know what he recommends, that would be lovely. The booklet says 1/16 to 1/8, but it's a lot of distance between these, so if anybody can give me a more specific suggestion I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a lot folks!

Welcome to the forum.

On what exact model of Stratocaster have you installed the pickups?

Fingerboard radius is the critical factor. The YJMs are designed for a 9.5" radius. On a true-to-vintage specification 7.25" radius (or a Shredhead 14"), when some of the polepieces are at the optimum distance from the strings, inevitably, at least two of the others will not be.

Re: YJM Fury Pickup Heights

Hi! Thanks for the welcome! My guitar is an MIM standard, the radius is 9.5, so that's correct. They just seem to want to be set very far away from the strings to not interfere with the sustain, but everybody else I see has them set relatively close and they don't seem to have any problems. I'm stumped :(

Re: YJM Fury Pickup Heights

How far from the strings are your three pickups adjusted? Also, what string gauges do you use and how high or low is the string action?

Re: YJM Fury Pickup Heights

I don't have measurements on Yngwie's guitars, but his action is usually pretty high, and he uses a more curved radius, which accounts for the stagger on the Fury set. BTW, he also disconnects his tone controls.

I keep adjusting them, but right now the neck and middle are at around 7/64 for the high E and 9/64 for the low E, and the bridge is around 6/64 for the high E and 7/64 for the low E. My string gauge is 9-46, I think 9-11-16-26-36-46. My action, measured from the the bottom of the string to the top of the fret at the 17th fret with a capo in the first fret, is around 7/64 for the unwound strings and a little less than 1/8 for the wound strings. My bridge saddles are not extremely high however, since I use a 0.012 relief on the neck.

I would say my action is relatively high as well (measurements above), although I don't know if it's as high as Yngwie's, and I would guess the radius of my guitar wouldn't be the problem since it matches the radius in his signature model. My tone controls are all disconnected as well.

I'm setting mine lower than I usually would, maybe 1/4" below the strings from the tallest (middle) magnets, middle pickup is lower still (almost flush with the pickguard).

Re: YJM Fury Pickup Heights

I got mines lower than other singles guitars pickups too...

Magnets on yjm can affect high notes on the strings...
