Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

... well, what are they based on? Are they basically solid-state imitations of the DSL range? Or are they going after a different marshall era? Or just a sound of their own?

Bzzzzzzzzzzzz

BINGO! I owned an mg50 for 3yrs and it was very buzzy sounding. The only thing it ever excelled at was drop tunings, it stayed real tight, but that terrible buzz never went away.

If you're looking to buy an mg, I suggest you don't, there's much better amps to be had in similar price ranges. The mg is basically an entry level amp with a marshall logo. If you want a real cheap marshall, try to find a used avt. I had an avt after the mg, and it was light yrs ahead. It wasn't as great as an all tube marshall, but it worked just fine.

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

yeah, +1 on getting an AVT instead, even if it means waiting a couple of months.

in my band one guitarist has an MG50 and the other has the AVT 2x12 combo.. the one with the MG *always* sounds like crap.. good job he's a deadbeat and has to borrow amps at 80% of our shows :D

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

So many better amps to be had at the price range of MGs... Marshall's got a pretty easy job there. Build cheap amps with bad tone, slap the Marshall logo in front of them, and watch the suckers fall. Can't blame them, I'd do it too if I hadn't learnt my lesson on this board. :D

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

I'd go with a digital amp if you want solid state, IMO the avt's are crap too. Even for solid state amps. Really, you could get a good used smaller tube combo for almost less than you could a new AVT.

But to answer the thread, they don't sound like marshals at all. I think they just sound like every other entry solid state amp marketed to beginners who want famous brands at modest prices. Lol, last time i went into a guitar store this kid who couldnt have been more than 14 had just got a Ibanez tone blaster 100. I wish i stopped him.

I've always used a cheapy mg10cd. it's not as bad as people are making it out to be to be honest, baring in mind amps are way too expensive for most of us in the UK, int he US it seems totally different, people go through amps like guitars.

If you're on a budget, I dont think it's a bad choice.

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

get a vox valvetronix. They fit they price range and sound much better. plus there are more sounds.

+1. My friend has a MG30DFX and although it doesn't sound terrible (I think of all the MGs, the 30 is the best) it does sound nearly as good as a Marshall should and considering the price, it's a disgusting rip off. That same friend just got a 2x12 Valvetronix AD120 combo and it sounds WAY better. Valvetronix amps are the ONLY modeling amps I like, they actually get in range of sounding like a tube amp.

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

You see everyone at Marshall was under the spell of an evil wizard dwarf from Crate who came to sabotage their family of great amplifiers. One day the spell was broken and they began manufacturing the JVM, but during that time the evil MG series was born.

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

Well, I actually own an MG15 :) But it was my first amp and was thrown in with my guitar. I love it and hate it - it has the general idea of what I'm going for, but also sounds like a black box full of angry bees. Basically, I'd be interested in a better version of that sounds (as opposed to going for a vox or fender, which are different beasts altogether).

Valvetronix - tried a couple, was REALLY disappointed. Don't know why. Just seemed unbelievably dull. The Vox numbers were sweet, but for crunchy stuff it just... well, I couldn't stomach it. I'm sure a lot of players can get rgeat sounds out of it, but I didn't take to it at all.

Most recently, I've been sticking some pedals through my MG15 and been getting fairly nice results. So basically I'm looking for a direct upgrade of the MG. May well try an AVT next chance I get...

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

i find the MG series to be extremely noisey amps.... i have a small one in my bedroom someone gave me.... not the best SS Marshall series

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

the MG's got ragged. some of the 2nd generation valvestates sound very good for solid state though like the VS100R and VS102R.

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

I own a MG15 and I always use it clean with pedals, with the amp volume < 6. Very noisy, and the speaker farts out above 6 on the volume. With good pedals, I manage to get decent tones out of it.
