Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

I'll probably get hell for saying this, but anyone, including Zakk Wylde, who tells you that any amp made by a certain brand just because that brand makes it is an IDIOT! I thought those MG Stacks looked cool but I tried one out and hated it. MGs suck, even though Marshall makes great amps.

But he did have a song called 'Machine Gun'!:smokin:

I surprised this is still going...so here's my 2 cents worth: About 89 or 90 I borrowed an MG 1x12 combo from a friendly music shop. On the way home we had quite a few refreshments, and when I got home, I fired it up. Sounded good, I thought, but I'm am totally drunk. Tried it (sober) the next day, what a POS...

I agree that there are better amps for the money, although, to be fair, there weren't as many choices even 18 yrs ago. Nevertheless, it didn't make me want to ditch the SS Standel amp/ProCo Rat set up that I was using as a stopgap rig. Not even close.

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

You see everyone at Marshall was under the spell of an evil wizard dwarf from Crate who came to sabotage their family of great amplifiers. One day the spell was broken and they began manufacturing the JVM, but during that time the evil MG series was born.

:laugh2::laugh2:

An MG in 1989 90? they were only issued a few years ago

I thought it was an MG series. I'm fairly certain I've seen them in catalogs like MF for some years now.

However, I could be wrong. It was a 30 watt 1x12 SS Marshall combo, whatever the series was. There were refreshments involved...

i'm pretty sure the MG series first came out in the early 2000's... maybe 4-5 years ago or so... the new AVT amps are OK but some of the older 90's models were nice....

back in 1987-89 i had a 1x12 SS Marshall combo... part of the LEAD Series... it was a weird beast.... loud yet still too super clean... clean for a Marshall sound anyways... I ended up selling it to some guy who used it as an acoustic amp... go figure....

I took a quick look around, but didn't see much for dates. The MG does look different than what I played yrs back, so I must have played an entirely different model. :smack: What I played certainly did have distortion. Swarm of bees distortion...

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

Never used an MG, but I got another thumbs up for you on the AVT. I have the same one as Zakk uses in that clip someone posted and I really love it. I only use it for home practice and it's perfect for my needs, maybe even a bit TOO big, as it's as loud as hell even at a quarter volume.

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

Thanks for the input, folks :) I'm most definitely wanting to ditch it and upgrade... I'm just not sure what would give me a better version of the same sound, if you catch my drift. Darnit, I need to try out an AVT...

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

What you should do is stop messin around and get one of those five-watt tube amps that are so easy to get these days...the Epiphone Valve Junior is a great amp for a hundred bucks, and the Blackheart Little Giant is the same thing with more EQ knobs.

Both are real class-A tube amps and sound awesome...if i needed a smallish amp that sounded great, i'd get myself a Blackheart combo and a 4x12 cab for when i need it to be louder.

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

for a long time i have been looking at getting a AVT amp for jamming and small gigs... but every time i do i end up with a tube amp.. oneday i may just get the AVT for the hell of it

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

i had a look on Marshalls site for AVT's..... i like the look of those 3 and 4 channel models.... the stereo one seems like such overkill but neat at the same time!

If you already have tube amps why do you want an AVT? :barf:

well for a few reasons... not because i need one but because they seem like a cool SS amp.. i use both SS and Tube amps without a problem... both style of amp designs sound and act different for sure but i like to make use of those differences... I use Fender SS amps from the 90's and 5150 and JCM 800 stacks.... i use a Berhinger combo and a real 1965 Fender Deluxe.. i'll use anything as long as i can get at least one good tone out of it

most of my SS amps sound better at low volume and my Tube amps sound great at higher volumes...

but more of teh real reason i want an AVT Marshall is a new toy to play with...

Re: Y'know the Marshall MG series...?

or just do yourself a favor and save up, buy a small marshall or mesa boogie all tube combo, and be done with it.

I would, but no such thing exists. The smallest I can find is a 40w DSL, which is Just Too Loud for me at the moment. A 15W equivalent, however.... *droool*
