When I received my Les Paul wiring harness the pots came attached to a metal plate. Just want to be sure on this. You don't install the plate when you put the pots in do you?

Re: You don't install the metal plate do you?

Well, Gibsons have their wiring harness on a metal plate.....have had that since 75 or thereabouts.

You don't have to.....but if the harness was a proper Gibson one out of a guitar then the plate would be factory.

Re: You don't install the metal plate do you?

I bought a CTS pot wiring harness. Epiphone Les Paul Standard 2001. I've never seen a metal plate on a Les Paul.

Re: You don't install the metal plate do you?

My 2006 GIbson LP Standard Faded came with the metal plate factory-installed.

Re: You don't install the metal plate do you?

If you bought a Gibson harness for an Epi
The plate may not match the cavity

The Gibson harness was probably a drop in replacement for the OEM Gibson
The spacing on the Epi may not match
If it does, I would leave them attached
If not, mark them and install withwithout the plate

Re: You don't install the metal plate do you?

The metal plate is a grounding plate. Unless you are going to add a ground wire around the pots, install with the plate.

Okay Thanks for the information. I bought the harness from Smokey Mountain from Ebay. It's a Les Paul 50's style CTS wiring upgrade.

Re: You don't install the metal plate do you?

Why do you need a pic? For what? A metal plate looks like well...

...a metal plate.

I think this business of including photos has gotten out of hand.

It looks like this:

Well....you are wanting to know whether the plate is necessary. If we can see what the setup of the specific harness is then we can attempt to clarify what we think and answer your question. If you can't be bothered adding info to your post or don't want us to be specific in our responses.....then not posting the question in the first place would be the ideal solution.

Re: You don't install the metal plate do you?

The plate in that scenario is to hold everything for shipping. The black ground wires that jump from pot to pot are the common ground. You do not have to use the plate in this case.

Re: You don't install the metal plate do you?

The ebay description says flat out, "Custom aluminum shield plate to insure proper grounding and noise reduction". It is intended to be installed as shipped.

You asked for help and gave as little info as possible. To give you the correct answer we needed to know what you had. There is no standard and far too many variables, a pic makes it quick and easy.

If you'd have read the info on the eBay page you had your answer plus the seller offered to answer any questions you might have had.

Re: You don't install the metal plate do you?

I shall install with the plate. Thank You. It will be a fun project for me.
