You ever just get a really stupid idea stuck in your head?

Currently, mine is to buy one of these:

And then rout that oddly placed single pickup slot to fit a P-Rails.

Previously, this part of my brain was obsessed with a mahogany-bodied baritone Jazzmaster with a reverse 70s-style Strat headstock.

Normally, I like to support my forum bro's. But that's one ugly guitar. I assume that means you're going to buy it now.

Re: You ever just get a really stupid idea stuck in your head?

Well, I've got my eye on an auction for an original one (which sadly doesn't come with the awesome gold metal flake pick guard) so we'll see how that goes.

Re: You ever just get a really stupid idea stuck in your head?

do answer your question, Yes absolutely. I fully support this.

Re: You ever just get a really stupid idea stuck in your head?

how that pickup is placed gives me OCD.
speaking of stupid ideas, right now I'm really tempted to buy a baritone strat neck. I only play in standard/half step down and I have enough spare necks lying around already:thumbsdow

Re: You ever just get a really stupid idea stuck in your head?

Speaking of dumb ideas, I really want a 24-fret ESP Alexi Laiho "V" style guitar (the longer-horned American version, not the true Rhoads style body) with a maple fretboard, recessed floyd, 3 x S.D. active Livewire Classic II Strat single coils and a spray can camo paint job.

You ever just get a really stupid idea stuck in your head?

I've had a rosewood topped Telecaster with reverse headstock and brass hardware stuck in my head for a while now. Might be a Warmoth order for my 30th BD in the summer.
Might not be stupid per se, but the bodies and necks I've put together on the builder would be quite expensive to get to Sweden.

Re: You ever just get a really stupid idea stuck in your head?

Last time I had a dumb idea stuck in my head regarding gear, it pertained to getting rid of it versus purchasing it.

Re: You ever just get a really stupid idea stuck in your head?

I'm not seeing a problem with the guitar in question. I doubt seriously it's a contender for playing Master of Puppets or Reign In Blood what with the pickup being in the middle of the body, but there's no problem there. Yeah, the pickguard looks like you could swat some real big flies with it, and the body and head are copies of half a dozen 1970s Japanese exports, and it appears to have a wooden bridge. So what?

I bet it sounds great as-is for slide/open tunings. No Surf/Cowboy Twang, no hyper-compressed New England Clam Chowdah Jazz, but I bet it's got a Delta Growl, especially through some fuzz and a Leslie.

Re: You ever just get a really stupid idea stuck in your head?

It's actually a copy(/reissue/tribute?) to the Bobkat, an American made guitar sold under several brands, including Airline, but most often as a Harmony. There were dual pickup versions, with more traditional pickup placement, as well. All of the originals I've seen were either Sunburst or red, with the red ones billed as "Colorkats."

Btw, you're not wrong about how it sounds:

That's the only truly bad idea. I think when you have a guitar with such a peculiar aesthetic, it's better to leave it bone stock and appreciate it for what it is. Modding a common guitar isn't as tough of a call specifically because they're so common anyway. IMO.

Re: You ever just get a really stupid idea stuck in your head?

Totally a fair point. But there's something alluring about the potential versatility of that particular single pickup in that particular(ly odd) spot.

So...maybe I should get two. They're quite cheap.

My last project with LACE sensors didn't turn out real well. Probably the worst sounding guitar I have. I have recently been kicking around the idea of an Esquire with a 22.5 in maple neck. Basically a chords only guitar which balances the brightness of a Tele with the percussive qualities of a shortscale guitar.

That's true, I just think the plasticy looking P-Rails won't look as decent as a chrome or nickel covered pickup there. Also I think the versatility of the P-Rails tends to be overstated. The P-90 tone is the money mode, the rail by itself is rather weak, and the series and parallel modes are not as satisfying as the P-90 side by itself, and therefore a bit unnecessary, IMO. I think in practice you get just as much mileage from any humbucker that contains a good split tone as well.

I've bought two or more of a single kind of cheaper guitar, same color and everything, just to mod them in two different ways. I'm all about that. I made one white Strat into a Billy Corgan type Strat with a black pick guard and DiMarzio blades, and another white Strat into a Hendrix Strat with the dirty white pick guard and low output single coils.
