You Guys Wanna See My New V???

So I’ve gotten a lot of new gear since posting on here last but this is my newest. As far as the others & other gear, I’ll get around to them at some point but it’s probably going to take me a while? 9DB14470-2331-4FE7-BEA9-1A0FBFCE1E3B.jpg

So this is my new 2016 Gibson Flying V Traditional Pro!!! I was a bit skeptical about buying this at first because the reviews on them were either really, really good, or complete garbage, & very little in between. Some people were describing them as feeling cheap & others were complaining about the fit/finish.

Personally I have to disagree on both fronts. Or @ least with mine, God knows Gibson’s QC wasn’t the best in 2016-2017? The fit & finish on this one is absolutely fantastic & it feels solid as any Gibson set neck. The original pickups were not the best, it had a Burstbucker 3 in the bridge & a 57 Classic neck which is kinda a wired combination but whatever right? Most Gibson pup’s suck IMHO!

I had a SH-16 Custom Hybrid/WLH neck set (My preferred Duncan humbucker set) with nickel covers kicking around from when I switched the humbuckers in my Limited Edition L.P. H/H Special over to a TV Jones SuperTron set. That’s also pretty bada$$ BTW But I digress...

Luckily this guitar came from the factory with a real harness instead of the quick connect garbage so installing them was actually quite easy & the end result was exactly what I was hoping for!!!

So there it is! I’ve never been a huge V fan, at least not until recently but I love this guitar & I was instructed to buy myself something that I normally wouldn’t but would enjoy by someone who carried a tremendous amount of clout in my life until passing away last month.

R.I.P. Mom, I’ll love you forever.....

Re: You Guys Wanna See My New V???

That's beautiful. That's something you'll keep forever considering the circumstances. My condolences to you and all who knew her.

I acquired my 2004 Martin D-28 similarly so I get it.

Re: You Guys Wanna See My New V???

killer V!!!so...you have had great gear sales in the past...can we expect some of your old stuff to show up in the trading post????

Re: You Guys Wanna See My New V???

ooooh nice. I was so close on one of those for a long time. And the used ones could be found for like $800 which seems like a steal for what you get in that package. Glad you like it!

Re: You Guys Wanna See My New V???

Thanks guys, she wasn’t very old at all!!! She died the day before her 64th birthday of Severe colitis and heart complications after signing a DNR. However her problems started about 8 months ago. She had a massive stroke which resulted in total right brain death & then spent 7 hours laying in a pile of vomit on the hottest day of the summer until she was finally found by a neighbor. Unfortunately at that point there was little they could do aside from removing her skull to alleviate some of the pressure & pray?

My mother was a very active and extremely independent person, which is why we didn’t worry about her being alone in her house? It’s also probably the only reason she lasted as long as she had? I mean she was in much better shape than I am at half her age! She woman used to walk 5 miles daily just for fun and hike mountains on the weekends! She ate like a rabbit & quit smoking decades ago but in the end none of it seemed to matter much.

Anyway losing all function on her left side and needing help from my sister and I to get onto the toilet or do anything really wasn’t who she was. She was still sharper than most with just her left brain but had some serious impulses control issues after & this led to a lot of frustration on her & some very rough times for us emotionally...

The guitar thing came about because after the stroke we decided we didn’t want her to have to be alone, like at all ever, even while in hospital, but they had sent her to Dartmouth Hitchcock medical center which is a fantastic hospital but about 2 1/2 hours away from our home. This means that we spent about three & 1/2 months living in hotel rooms (mainly the comfort inn and residence inn) but this resulted in quite the bill so I decided to sell my old ES-335 & ES-139 so we could afford to keep doing this...

Upon finding out mom was a little upset that I sold them & tried to buy
me a replacement but I just couldn’t take the money from her? So she made me promise that if something did happen to that I’d take the cash she had at the house, split it with my sisters, & buy a new fiddle with my share...

So this is that guitar & I was able to get it “storefront new” with a hardcase & the original bag for $900 shipped....

I’ll tell you, my sister & I honestly whole heartily believe my mom held on in abject misery for eight + months just so my sister and I would have a chance to say goodbye and let her know how much we loved her. If she gone on the floor that day, I think that may have been too much to bear for us???

The moral of this story if there is one is that you should never wait to tell people you love how much you care for them & life is short, unpredictable, & anything but fair...

Re: You Guys Wanna See My New V???

wow man...what a beautiful story...even with all the pain, the beautiful person your mom was shines thru....

Re: You Guys Wanna See My New V???

Indeed, a stunning Flying V, good Sir! Comes with coil splitting, if I'm not mistaken? A tone demo will be apreciated:headbang:

Prayers and best wishes to your family.

I’m not a V guy, but love the way that one looks with the top bound and the covered pickups.

I concur. We lost my father in law six years ago on December 5 and my dad three years ago on December 23, both after about a two year battle with cancer each. My father in law helped me build the guitar in my avatar and I bought the guitar below I honor of my dad last year in conjunction with my 50th anniversary on the planet.

Be proud, she sounds like a wonderful, tough and very brave lady... I’m sure she’s looking down feeling very proud of you all.

Re: You Guys Wanna See My New V???

Wow. A special lady for sure. My Martin was bought with my part of my uncle's estate after he passed in 2003 of a heart attack. And it was 2 weeks after our oldest was born plus my wife was in the hospital again with a blood infection they couldn't figure out. We almost lost her. Thankfully that didn't happen. Consider your V a lifetime instrument.

Re: You Guys Wanna See My New V???

Seriously guys, thanks for all your kind words & sharing your own stories!!!

It’s nice to know that I’m not the first person going through something like this & I’ve really missed the conversations on this sight!

Re: You Guys Wanna See My New V???

The flying V is the perfect guitar to honor your mother -as it is the ONLY guitar designed for the express purpose of being able to stand up against a wall without falling over and not ever needing a guitar stand. Kind of like when parents were your stand and support growing up.
