You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

So it's not a super scientific experiment, but I recorded some DI's to be used on the Sneap Forum for reamp tests, and decided to do it with both of my main axes.

Stinnett #003 w/89

ESP M-1 NTB w/Alt 8

Same strings, tuning, pick, etc... for both, and this is just a crappy POD tone. You can still hear the difference in attack, harmonics, clarity, and tightness between the two.

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

i like the looser, fatter sound from the alt.8, but i like the sharper highs from the 89 better.

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

I must need better headphones. I really can not hear the difference.

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

I havent heard recordings from you in awhile VK, I miss them!! great playing for those short clips :beerchug:

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

That Stinnett with the 89 sounded pretty killer. I prefer that one, actually.

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

the 89 definitely had more of a modern sound to it. i preferred the alt 8 though.

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

alt 8 sounded better to me, but I'm with everdrone: I was just anxious to hear some of your stuff again.

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

Great tones on both. The differences were there, but small

I thought the Alt8 was less compressed, and overall bigger sounding, but the 89 had more punch, and attack.

I slightly prefer the grindy low mids of the Alt8, but both were awesome.

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

Nice riffs!

.....I found the difference slight but if you held a gun to my head I'd prefer the alt 8s

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

I much prefer the 89 here, but usually I'm a sucker for more blown out boxy metal guitars than scooped. Funny really as I own a Epi Les Paul Custom (3 humbucker) with a 85b, 81m, 60n setup and I never play it in comparison to my Washburn X-50 with Duncan Custom/59 setup. (more for general rock though, but I'd still take that over the active).

Kudos on the demos (Y)

Great clips, Jeff!

I like them both for different reasons.

The low-mid whomp from the Alt-8 does good things for the single notes, but the palm mutes are more defined and percussive with the 89.

Clearly the answer is to always do your double-tracking using both guitars panned L/R. :)

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

I hear Lamb of God in there a little bit, very nice!
I am liking the Alt8 just a hair more, its not quite as sterile and has a touch more raunch to it.
I like em both though for sure.

Re: You guys'll like this... EMG89 vs Alt 8

i would like the best of both worlds.

if i were mixing, i'd be thinking if i choose pickup x, will i be about to squeeze out the sounds i like of pickup y in addition ? which would do the better job of approximating the other as well as itself ?

well it all depends on the chain doesn't it.

i'd have to go with the clarity of the 89.

i think i could add the fat muddy bed of the alt 8 to the mix easier than i could try to add the clarity of the 89 to the mix alt 8.

on the other hand....if it were a really trebley amp, i'd choose the alt8.

i'll take the 89 overall. i think it would be ready for any eventuality.

My thoughts exactly.

Of the two, if I had to pick only one guitar, I'd go with the ESP w. Alt 8. I'm a low mid junkie though.

Swapped that Alt 8 out and recorded with it again!

This would be cool, but I've found when mixing pickups (especially when quad tracking), the qualities and resonances add up and make things a lot less tight than they otherwise would be. I aim for near-phase-problems tightness when I'm tracking gtrs, and I've practiced for too long to let my über-right hand skills be tainted by untightness from pickups haha!

What it really comes down to is me just absolutely loving the pick attack and response from EMG's, I know them super well and my playing has adapted around them - I can coax any tone I want/need out of them and I find passives just don't offer the same compliments to my playing style, unfortunately. :(

VK, what is your band websites with you playing guitar? are you gonna record your new songs soon? It would be awesome to hear them; I remember you had a couple recording projects with you on guitar in the past...sounded awesome! I wanna hear more with that type of riffage that you did on this lil' clip :)

I've had clips scattered all over the place (soundclick, myspace, dropbox, etc) but have taken really all of them down and am building back up, writing complete songs, etc... getting ready to do a proper ep of sorts.

There's still the band I do vocals in and will be playing guitar on the next album, Ruins, that's worth checking out!

As far as this little riff... still not done anything with it and it's really far from my usual style - check out the other thread I just posted in Tips/Clips for something really indicative of my usual style. Think Soilwork meets Sylosis and you're in the ballpark. I'm finally finding time to tie up loose ends and really start writing for myself, rather than producing for other people, which I'm really looking forward to.
