You know what would be the least pleasant thing in the world to wire?

Picture this: Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty. Now combine that with a modified sort of Jimmy Page wiring. It would have the standard 3 way toggle switch and it would have a dedicated volume and tone for each of the 3 pickups. And here are the push pulls: the volume controls split the coils, the tone controls have one doing series/parallel, one doing phasing, and one adding in the middle pickup.
Now that I think about it, throw in a master veritone. I am in no way asking you to wire this up for me, that would be kind of like asking your neighbor to paint your porch for you because you can't be bothered. I'm just saying imagine how big of a PITA that would be to put together.
If you have any worse ideas, please respond.

I've done pretty much that type of wiring on my '73 Rick bass back in '76.
It had three pickups, each with series/parallel and phase switches. Then I could wire the pickups in series with each other. It had a 6-position Varitone (with inductor), and a master volume. It also had active bass and treble controls! My band mates called it the "Space Bass"!

There were no push pull pots back then, so I used mini toggle switches.

A much harder instrument to rewire was my EB-2DC!

How about wiring up the aforementioned Black Beauty with one of those super freeway switches?

....and make it an ES

I was with it until Securb threw in the es. Nooo haha.

I never liked playing those three humbucker Gibsons. Had a girlfriend with an SG with three pickups. The middle pickup gets in my way.

I have to say after having all those switching options, there was only a few tones I used often. Maybe on guitar it would have been more useful!

Re: You know what would be the least pleasant thing in the world to wire?

I'm happy with my hsh with a volume, tone, partial split toggles for the hbs and a toggle for neck/bridge on. That's plenty complex for me.

Also have a hss with a 100k volume, 20k spin a split, and a neck bridge blender. That one's fun.

For $#!+$ and giggles, here's the wiring diagram that's currently in my '85 Westone...

It's actually kind of ridiculous, and I don't use most of the options... but it was fun to design and put together. :D

i use to love it and then i realized i only really seek out two sounds. Neck and bridge. :18:

Soldering a used EMG 89 whose leads have been cut too short

You can send it to me if you're tired of it… I'd be willing to make that sacrifice for you!

Re: You know what would be the least pleasant thing in the world to wire?

Or here's better: 3 volumes and tones with the push-pulls as I stated originally, freeway switch will have the 3 normal positions, but the other 3 will be exactly the same expect the pickups split to the opposite coil. Also the pickups will be active and have a switch to switch between 9 and 18 volt. And of course the veritone.
Edit: I almost forgot, a mini toggle for piezo pickups

Those original BC Rich Bich doublenecks looked like a wiring nightmare. This is where PC boards and snap on connectors would help. Now put it in a semi hollow, with no back plate. And Add a pickup to each neck.

Soldering lead wires to coil wires.

Re: You know what would be the least pleasant thing in the world to wire?

If I have a diagram, I can wire it. But, I'm perfectly happy with a LP Junior or two buckers wired straight up. If they are 4 wire I'll usually put in push pulls for coil splitting but other than that, meh.

The controls on that BC Rich look like the guy who made it drilled a bunch of holes blindfolded and put knobs and switches where they ended up.

Yeah, it seems like a pretty silly, eccentric layout.

They actually make sense when you use it.

Re: You know what would be the least pleasant thing in the world to wire?

Try wiring a 5 way PRS style rotary switch, then you will find all other wiring bliss :)

Re: You know what would be the least pleasant thing in the world to wire?

I once wired a 6 pole rotary switch. It's a bit tricky.
