considering the response i got with my question regarding phasers, why not start a thread about great cheap effects pedals overall?? they obviously have to be reliable and well built, since tone is rather individual choice...and how bout setting the price limit to about 100$?? you can just say what do you like about it etcetc...

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

Some of the Danos are great pedals for the money:
-Fish & Chips EQ
-Chicken Salad Vibrato (Quasi Univibe/phaser)
-French Toast Octave Fuzz

-Ibanex DE7 Delay is apparently a great deal for an analog voiced delay that also oscillates well.

-Digitech Bad Monkey is a good value for an overdrive pedal

I'm sure I'll think of some others.

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

The Digitech X-series are pretty cool. I have a Distortion Factory and DigiDelay, and like them both a lot. Boss pedals are always cool. One of my favorite pedals is the Arion Tubulator. You can score them from Musicians Friend for as low as $10, and it's fantastic for adding some boost to your gain tone.

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

I think people also like the Arion chorus as well.

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

Where is the Tubulator crowd, where is that pink and black flag, come on now lads.

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

Bad Monkey is $40US...and really really good.

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

I had a Digitech Hot Head distortion. Served me fairly well, I always ran the emulated out into my amp as it sounded smoother. I bought it for $40 CDN at a pawn shop, but it was completely new, had all the booklets and was in sealed plastic packaging.

I now have a Boss DS-1. I love it, I had kind of always wanted one since I found out Kurdt Cobain used one. I went to the pawn shop circuit to replace the Hot head after it broke, and the only one that hard any distortion pedals left had a Digitech Grunge and a DS-1. The Grunge was ok, a little too heavy for my preferences though, and just felt it was trying to go overboard. Where I wanted something that could give me lots of good distortion, but that would be a good boost pedal for when I got a stack. The DS-1 had that. The Grunge had more EQ flexibility, but the DS-1 was more of what i wanted, and $5 cheaper, so I went with it.

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

I would think using the effects loops featured on many amp would be the way to do it. That way your guitar tone is always straight to the amp, and pedals/stompboxes don't affect that. I can't do that right now cause my amp doesn't have that option, but when i get a stack this summer I'll definately be taking advantage of that feature.
The only things I put in the loop are delay (must, I hate it in front) and the Jamman. Once in a while tremolo and phaser when I'm going for a synth type sound, but my phasers, vibes, flangers and chorus sound better to me out front. YMMV :)

Oops that post was for another thrread, i shall move it and delete the one here. Sorry guys. BUY A DS-1!!!

For less than $100, I recommend anything from Boss, DigiTech X-Series, or Ibanez Tone-Lok (the 7-series). A lot of people like Danelectro, but I prefer the 3 brands I listed. Oh yeah, the DOD 250 is a cool overdrive also. Of the 3 I mentioned, Boss has the best sound quality and the best build quality. DigiTech effects sound good to me, but Boss sounds more refined and more professional. The Ibanez 7-series effects get dramatic, but can sound like toys. I like having that sound to mess with sometimes.

The best 'cheap' pedal I've ever bought is a Made In Japan BOSS SD1 Super Overdrive that I bought from a friend of a friend for £10.

They didn't like it so offered it to me. They warned me against buying it though because 'it doesn't do metal distortion' :D

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

I once had a Dan Electro Black Coffee Metal Distortion. It was my first distortion pedal, and it sucked. My friend bought a Fab Chorus, and though it sounded okay (my Ibanez Bass Chorus sounds way better) it has stopped working properly. I don't think it even lasted 4 months. No Danelectro I've ever tried has really inspired me, though I guess they're okay for a first pedal or if you're REALLY broke.

Digitechs are built to take a lot of abuse, easy to stomp for the effect, and easy to change batteries if need be, and most have stereo outputs (all things Dan Electro doesn't do). Digitech doesn't quite match up sound wise in many cases IMO. You can get some really good Digitechs and they have some amazing multi-effects systems (GNX and RP series).

Boss is pretty sweet, though all their sh*t looks old, especially their recording and multi-effects equipment. They are built fairly well, though not as rugged as digitechs, and they have some amazing effects. They've certainly set some standards. I feel they should follow Digitech and make all their pedals with dual outputs though.

My friend, same one with the Fab Chorus, got a DOD Flange from his cousin for Christmas, and it sounds really good. Rugged build, flexible yet simple, and fun to play with.

If you're broke though, always check out the hock shops, you'd be surprised at what you can find!

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

I was pondering the no money/want FX conundrum a while ago, and I came to this solution:

Build em yourself :D.

Now about 90% of my board is FX that I've soldered together myself. And they all sound damned good too :fing2: Total cost tends to come to about $30 to $40 for a single pedal.

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

A DIY effect. Cheap (usually). Parts are replaceable (most of the time), and you can always say that it's 'Custom Made' or 'Hand Made' lol

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

arion tubulator

boss ds-1

bad monkey

great pedals
I have all these (and many more) in my little effects museum on one wall of my studio. I never use any of them, but I have them if I change my mind. I even bought another Tubulator when I saw them on sale for $9.99.

If you want to do mods on a Tubescreamer-type circuit, the Tubulator is a very good place to start as they are (like the old Tubescreamer) very simple circuits that are very moddable; put in OpAmp and diode sockets and go crazy. I can think of better ways to waste time, but some people like that stuff.

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

For many years I used a Boss Super Overdrive. I use a TS9 now, but the SOD is a really good OD for about 40$ new!

Good call on the DIY. You can find a schematic and even a PCB for almost any classic effect.

Fenderpunk, I think you're playing the wrong Danos. ;) See my post on the "good" ones.

Re: you want effects but you're broke!!! this is where you come

If you can find a Danelectro Wasabi Overdrive then grab it. It may be the last OVerdrive you get in a long long time.
