Your Fav Head

Re: Your Fav Head

I need half stacks like Pam Anderson needs larger boobs, but in addition to the two plexi reissues, I would love to have a 2555 Jubilee.

This one's "ok":

Re: Your Fav Head

Fender Blackface Bassman (AB165 circuit), Mesa Dual Rec, Mesa Nomad, Marshall JCM 800, Marshall JVM410H, Vox AC-30 (is there a head version of this? I don't care, it goes on the list anyway), and Orange Tiny Terror.

Re: Your Fav Head

In theory, the THD Bi-Valve 30 for being able to run any commom pre and power tube types together without biasing.
In reality, since it's the head I now own...Musicman HD 150...tasty in a Deluxe Reverb kind of way, but louder.

Re: Your Fav Head

What's the Tone Master like? They seem to have quite a following...

LesPaul1981 appropriately said this about a Marshall in another thread this month. "i love the way it roars. its like a pissed off T-rex or something."

The Tone-Master is more akin to a Gigantic Fire Breathing Dragon with the same presence it would have on the ground as in the air. It is all of a Fender that's been inspired by a few classic amps of the past rolled into one unit making it more of a Zinky-Fender. I'm not too good at explaining tone, for me it's just something that you hear. For that matter all amps respond a bit differently to each of us though the core is similar to what it is. This is and has been my top favourite for years now, since new. For me any amp is replacable, but this one is it's own thing. It works for me.

The Tone-Master is very much "Brown-Faced" and has qualities of a Band-Master that can get very Plexi-like, to even on into JCM800ish territory. I find it a very good mix of Vintage/Modern. For me I don't like getting too "modern" into screeching high-gain machines. If I want to achieve more gain I'll alter it's character with something up in front of it.

Bruce Zinky developed the Tone-Master prior to working at Fender, but used it as one of the first two of Fender's new designs once he was with the CS Amp Dept. He says this of a few of the amps that he built while at Fender, "I suppose I loosely used elements from blonde Fender amps, as well as a few cues from Marshall, but they were new designs."

It is CRUNCH with expression.., with plenty of clarity when wanted. It can be silky-glassy clean. Very touch responsive.

Definitely don't hesitate to try one when you can.

Re: Your Fav Head

I haven't found anything that gives me the pure tone these do... though I'd love to try a Tone Master... a Splawn and a Bognor!

Re: Your Fav Head

God that sounds so tempting but they're definitely out of my range (the heads go for about 800-1000 on eBay, I think, then the cost of a cab...)

Is there anything like it at -all- at a lower wattage? I don't really need that much power, probably 40w at the max.

Thanks duders.

Re: Your Fav Head

My 1973 Marshall 50 watt head. I'm usually a hand wired Marshall snob, and this one is a PC, but Ken Fisher did some work on it and the second I heard it, I bought it. The overdrive imo is perfect. Sweet, warm, great for rock, blues, metal, it's like the amp can wear almost any hat it wants to.

I like this:

but lately the VHT Ultra-lead head or even those rack units GP3-2/90/2 start to seem very interesting......

Yeah, you're right both the MK and the Hellcat go for £800-1000 on the Bay. The Hellcat is rated at 35 watts.. a loud but useable 35 watts though. The MK is a VERY loud 50 watter. The thing with both amps is that they are very toneful (is that a word?..lol) and the sound NEVER gets mushy. The ONLY time I was unhappy with the sound was when I used them with a Mesa Trad 4 x 12, they sounded VERY dark.. I nearly got rid of both! Then I got a 4 x 10, an old Orange 4 x 12 and now a Cornford 4 x 12 and all 3 sound superb.

I really would like another Prosonic thinking about it... and a Tone Master... oh dear!
