Re: Your favorite warm neck tone!?
Humbuckers: Doc…I ain't got your bucks man…can't afford to try 9 different 7,6k #42s at $120 a piece to compare.
My pursuit has been methodical and cross a wide spectrum of wire gauges and imbalanced coils. I spent $1100 on pickups in the last 14 months according to my wife. For some reason to her there is no offset for the ones I sold. I just keep hearing $1100 and thin ice.
I have a drawing table, it has a drawer that measures 38" x 26", it is full of pickups that I couldn't part with. There is a compass sitting on top of the table. The dial swings every time I open or close the drawer.
It gives me some sorta Penthrane rush, like an elongated depth deception. I can hear each one times the magnet variable times the guitar there in. Every week or so I take a pot shot and more often than not prove myself right…is this sick…Bo you do it to...at least Lew gets paid to do it.
Oh yea, my favorite HBs. While I haven't nailed my favorite bridge HBs as far as necks go I have 2 '76 Venturas, they measure 8.3 something each but the neck is 47mm and the bridge is 49mm (a3 mags). Closest to Duane's thick tones I've ever been. I have 2 Burny VH-1s, each measure 8. something (a2 mags) with 48/50mm spacing...Closest to Duane Fillmore I've ever been.
Consider that the are Japanese pickups and the metric equivalent to #42 is somewhere between #42 and #43. I have bought a bunch of Japanese pickups within these specs since I fell in love with these and they don't come close (man I've changed mags). After 3 law suite LPs (in the 7 to 800 dollar range) with less than Gibson perfect necks...I'd buy another old Ventura or Penco for $400 just for the pickups...and throw away the guitar.
If that WCR guy had gotten a little closer I might not be here (on the forum) now (see What's FLO).
Neck HBs I'd never sell?...My T tops…they're 47mm and while they maybe lame (7.1 and 7.3) they are the only pickups (all my bridges are ABR) that whole step bends line up…kinda hard to bring your self to rewinding these but you can't buy that spacing.
You guys may think I'm nuts …I have a friend who made a guitar out of a skate board. He's convinced that the resins in between the maple plies is where the tone is. He sold his Route 66 and bought a Jeckle…he has a black face Super…go figure.
