Your favourite scale for soloing!

Em, but in the key of D. Not sure which mode that is, sorry.. ;)
You are playing D mixolydian when you play Em over D major. The key of D major has two sharps, F# and C#. The key of E minor has one sharp, F#. You are taking D major and you flat the seventh note of the scale which gives you C, hence D mixolydian.

Sounds like quite mixobrontotonic for me... :smack: :)

I like the mixolydian scale. It has a neat sound. Jerry Garcia used to use it alot.

Re: Your favourite scale for soloing!

I have no idea what I'm doing. I play what sounds right to me. I don't normally solo in a pentatonic scale, but that's about all I really know. As far as keys go, I like F#, A, and G and B and Bb, but don't have a problem really with any of them.

If it weren´t for the f# I think you´d have hit the nail on the head. But F# is definitely not in it (at least not the way I do it), not even as a "blue note". The "D Major" is probably the source, I don´t think I´ve ever purposely used a major scale in my life, too friendly :D

The actual notes I use (in this scenario) are: D-E-F-G-A-A#-C

I´m not sure, but I think that´s just a little off ;)

I use the major scale a lot...I really like the maj 3rd and the #7. Plus it is very rare in rock music, so immediately you get a refreshing sound.

Re: Your favourite scale for soloing!

Melodic and Harmonic Minor

Whole Tone (very mysterious sounding)

Chromatic

Blues Pentatonic

Outside of that, my ear directs me ultimately.

That scale with those notes is D Aeolian or D minor. I misunderstood what you said before, I thought you were actually playing an Em scale within a D Major key. What you're doing is playing the pattern for an Aeolian or Minor Diatonic scale starting in the key fo D.

Re: Your favourite scale for soloing!

usually the scale that the key of the song is in ;)

I know i know... I like Aeolian (minor) Ionian (major) and Mixolydian stuff a lot. Occasionally a Lydian and a phrygian, and some harmonic minor stuff will sneak their way in their as well.

Thanks for clearing that up, now I actually KNOW what scale I´m using 80% of the time :friday:

Re: Your favourite scale for soloing!

I can't solo, someone teach me!!!! :yell: Anyone have any tabs or something of different soloing scales or something? :32: Everytime I try soloing by ear it never sounds right...... :smack:

Re: Your favourite scale for soloing!

I generally disect the progression and use the appropriate scales focusing on the changes. An easy example: Blues/Rock in the key of G the I, IV, V is G, C, D respectively, so I use the G Blues and Minor Pent, C Blues and Minor Pent, and D Blues/Minor Pent at the changes, often using chromatic notes as passing tones.

In more complex chord progressions with seven chords, I will employ the Mixo since it has the b7 that complements the seven chord.

Before I start school at the Atlanta Institute of Music, I used to just hit notes and figure out later that I was using primarily the minor pent and blues scales. Now schooling has kinda caused me to analyze the progression, identify the neighboring tones and play the changes to really intensify the solo.

If I have never jammed a tune before, though, I find I am inadvertently using the BLues or minor pent scales until I learn the turnarounds just to be safe.

Re: Your favourite scale for soloing!

I just run all the major scale modes. When you're a crappy Paul Gilbert fanatic like me, it's essential :)

Re: Your favourite scale for soloing!

F# and Cm. I just kind of wing it all by ear. Not saying I'm great or even any good at it either, but that's what I do. I'm still learning with a LONG way to go.

Re: Your favourite scale for soloing!

I usually don't know, but the ones I do know I use a lot are G major and F major. But I usually diminish notes during my playing, just sounds cool and exotic, especially if you know how to do a smooth switch.

Re: Your favourite scale for soloing!

for keys of solos i tend to go towards the open string keys because i play heavier music theres a lot of chugging with D, E, and A power chords. i tend to use the Minor Pentatonic, Harmonic Minor, and Aeolian. my other guitarist in the band tends to use a Spanish Phrygian scale....mostly because it's one of the 1st ones he learned but it's got a very cool sound to it.
