Way too many to get into all but a bunch of my rockin' lifers....

Ace (and Paul where applicable) - all the old stuff - anything through Dynasty and even Ace's stuff on Unmasked. Even more so Ace's KISS era solo album, Eddie Kramer and Ace were a match made in heaven.

Nuge - Ted Nugent, Cat Scratch and Double Live albums. They are the baddest of the bad.

VH - the first album.

Knopfler's sound on Sultans. I keep buying Strats thinking maybe someday.

Jimi his sound on Angel, Little Wing and the Wind Cries among others.

Brad and Joe - Featuring and Rocks would be quintessential. I can also add in JPP I've GOt the Rock N Rolls Again.

Schenker - UFO Obsession and the first Schenker Group album.

Paul Chapman - his raunchy sound on the Godd THe Bad The Waysted.

DiMeola - his electric sound on Gypsy and Casino

Muddy's early electric sound, especially slide. Devastating.

Johnny Thunders - LAMF and the Dolls albums (Sylvain Sylvain too!)

Steve Jones - Bollocks and the Neurotic Ousiders album

Johnny Ramone - Rocket to Russia

Angus and Malcolm - Highway to Hell

That's about it :) Heck, Y'ALL should listen to those tracks just to get a look inside my head and what inspires a british kid to pick up a guitar :D

I don't know. I haven't really ever heard it on a recording, but I can hear it clearly in my head. I've gotten close a few times but haven't quite nailed it.

im on a ben harper binge right now. one album in particular: burn to shine. the title track has one of the most awesome solo tones ever. its not my holy tone by far...but i felt it worth a mention

To be fair, Radiohead is really a different band than those two. The guitars in the tune "Just" that JimboJSR mentioned are a good example of inventive use of guitar tones... the first time I heard the album "The Bends" (the album with "Just"), the tones jumped out at me immediately. It's my favourite Radiohead album... sorry OK Computer. And I would argue that Radiohead write very different, often more complex songs than Nirvana or Soundgarden.

Though I do like Blackhole Sun :D

...One thing that I enjoy about my Mustang was the ability to plug into just about any high gain amp and NAIL things like the Heart Shaped Box tone, or Rape Me... Very cool, vibey tones. Both pickups on on the Mustang creates a sound you can't get anywhere else.

For me it would have to be:
Joe Satriani's tone on Surfing with the Alien
or
Alex Lifeson's tone with on most of Rush's albums.
or even
Tony Iommi's tone.

I remember being all of 15 or so when I picked up the Beano album. It was one of the first CD's I ever got along with "The Essential Hendrix Volumes 1 and 2."

Most of my friends were getting into SRV at the time and as much as I enjoyed his work, and still do, I'd been listening since the early 80's when my brother was a total fanatic about him.

Clapton was kinda "old hat" to alot of them due to the Crossroads Box Set, a Michelob commercial and the proliferation of albums like Slowhand. He was who he was, and there was likely something in there, but we really didn't have anyone to tell us where to look.

I remember seeing that album mentioned and thought "this is old enough, there HAS to be something to this..."

Totally blew my mind. It had that warmth and brightness to it. That sound, that Marshall with almost a voice-like quality to it.

For years as I cycled through random gear everyone told me the same thing; "why don't you just get a Les Paul or a 335 and a Marshall and be done with it."

It kills me to think that I spent so many years and so many dollars trying to get that sound when everyone was telling me the exact same thing, over and over again.

I have the Les Paul and the 335. The Marshall, to some extent has eluded me. A BluesBreaker would likely be too loud for almost anything I would be doing. But I do admit that I spent about 50% of my time on the JTM setting on the Valvetronix going for that sound.

Sounds like it's time to invest in a JTM, and perhaps an attenuator to boot.

<Devil's Advocate>Then again, why should that matter? We're talking about the tone that inspired us, not the playing. Jonny Greenwood is technically a million miles ahead of Gallagher or Hayes, but I enjoy the tones equally. I did like the "tele" aspect to the tones on The Bends, but I don't strongly prefer it over those other 3 tracks. In fact, given the choice, I'd probably rather have a tone heard on Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory than any Radiohead album (though Jonny's talent would be rather nice!!!) </Devil's Advocate>

While we're on the topic of Jonny Greenwood, check out his very cool, wah-esque sound on "Lucky," off OK Computer. It's achieved with a homemade tremolo pedal going into an envelope filter, along with some phasing.

That's a great tone/effect. Inventive and inspiring.

While its not a tone I hope to achieve, it's an absolutely amazing tone I have to admit. Best Les Paul through Marshall tone I've ever heard.
