Your LINE6 Delay Modeler DL-4 and You

Tell me about your relationship with your DL-4. I bought one a couple of weeks ago, sold on the Loop Sampler and the numerous choices of delays.

Well, long story short, I'm not pleased with any of the delays from the box. They sound very sterile and I just can't justify spending $250 on one of these if I don't love a single sound from it. That said, I have less than a week to return this green machine if I do decide to.

So, what are your true opinions about it? Did you have trouble getting a useable delay out of it? Are you satisfied with the tones? If it were stolen, would you buy another?

I only used the one I had as a looper, I tried matching tones with my Boss DD3 but the DL4 couldn't hang. Much like amp models, sounds good on it's own but when you put it next to the real thing it's not the same.

I like mine, but I bought it used and payed $150, if memory serves me correctly(har har). That's the most that I paid, anyway. I like the three presets, the tap tempo, and the ability to have the repeats trail off when you turn it off. I use the digital delay more than I do anything else. Some of the old delay models are cool-sounding in a gnarly kind of way, but I don't really use them. I don't use the loop sampler very much, almost never.

I tend to like it for the ability to get any kind of delay ever invented....especially the gritty echoplex type sounds. Also, I set it up to have a spacious/reverby type of U2 sound. The main thing about L6 stuff is you've got to sit down on a chair with the thing in your lap for a few hours, and really extract the best sounds possible. Also, it makes a difference if you're programming it while playing at stage volume or bedroom levels, so mix level sounds as natural as possible.

I've played with the loop function many times, but I just prefer to find 3 useable delays out of it, store them, and just leave it alone for a long time. After I find my uses for it, the only button that matters is the tap tempo.

With pedals like that, it's best to find out exactly what you want from it, then leave it.
If you keep tweaking, you'll always feel like you're searching for something, but don't know what it is exactly.........which can also be a positive thing, if you stumble on something really cool.

I love mine- delay tones and all. Maybe I don't use them the same way y'all do, but mine is the perfect delay for me- add an expression pedal and I am set. I use the looper for every solo gig I do.
The delays sound better to these ears than Boss delays. And I can make that swooshy sound when I change the delay time.
The DL4 makes a cool chorus, overdrive, and auto-wah if you set the controls right. Also, you can set it in true bypass, if that is your thing. I don't use it, so delays trail off when I shut t off, or continue and allow me to play overtop. Backwards, auto-swell...all kinds of groovy sounds. And tap tempo has me spoiled. No more delays for me without it.
