Your most “bipolar” pedal?

Sometimes you love it, sometimes you hate it, no matter where you set the controls there are some days you think “why did I buy this” other days you think “this rocks!”

For me, it’s the Wampler Velvet Fuzz. So many days I’ve thought about selling/trading it. Then days like today it’s raw and singing, thick but cutting, perfect for Gilmour and Hendrix type fuzz tones.

How about you?

I think that I'm lucky, I don't have any pedals like that.

I've got a germanium big muff like that. Some days the things is ridiculously awesome. Some days it's just a muddy mess.

I have an old HBE (HomeBrew Electronics) fuzz that sometimes sounds out of this world, then other times it sounds awful...

MXR DynaComp. Hated it for everything except for Strats in the notch positions, totally sublime at that, and only at that.

Mooer Ocean Machine. I don't own one bit recently tested one for half an hour and it has the most steep learning curve of any pedal I've ever tried. But holy crap does it sound awesome. It's an endless pedal. But it's really complex.

I think it kinda is. Fuzz is one of those things that I play with, then hate. Then after awhile, I miss it, and play with it some more. Probably unrelated, but fuzz always sounds better with beer.

Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi. Some days it’s everything I’ve ever hated about fuzz pedals. Other days, it’s every bit as cool as you’d think it would be.

Temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, all can play a part, one way or another.

I believe that is why they started using silicon back in the day: consistent performance.
A guy on another forum I lurk puts his ge fuzz face in the refrigerator all day before a gig! Swears it works.

Never discount perception. When recording stuff, after a couple hours I need to step away and come back the next day. The same total crap recording usually sounds amazing the next day with a fresh listen.

Monte Allums Boss SD-1 GT. Sometimes it's great, but recently, it's spent much more time off my board than on, especially since I built a Centaur Klone. Sometimes I love the huge crunch tones the SD-1 gives, but then other times, it sounds bright and thin.

Id say my Line 6 big Green Delay.

Its soooooo much fun to make sounds with ...

-but its also a bit of a tone suck if a really wet mix.

Interesting, next time a germanium pedal finds it's way into my hands, I might have to borrow some of my church's recording equipment to a/b warm versus cold.
