Your neck-to-body construction of choice:

-Bolt-on,
-Set Neck or
-Neck trough?

I thougth this could be a cool way for me and everyone else to share their opinions about this,
and at the same time people like me could get some advice on how different construction methods affect sound and playabillity

So, what do you think? Is the neck trough construction totally superior to bolt-on and setneck? Does set neck construction really add so much sustain as they say?

I have a set, a bolt, and will soon have another bolt. I think I prefer a nice, tight bolt joint.

I've gotta go with neck through. Not only do you get the sustain, but (for the most part) you get better access to the higher frets.

I prefer neck thru.
It's usually found on Super strat styles like Carvin, Jackson, and ESP.
Which is my prefered style of guitar.

I just like a guitar with 24 frets, Floyd Rose, deep cutaways, heel-less joint, easy access to the 24th fret.

Neck thru does that for me.

Set neck is my next choice.
And there are many guitars finally coming out with a contoured set neck heel.
Ibanez and Carvin(before switching to neck thru) were doing a contoured set neck heel a long time ago.
It's nice to see others finally adopting that approach. Like Schecter Diamond and ESP/LTD.

theres too many depths of set necks for me to ever trust one for stability. i had a friend who had an epiphone SG with a set neck that busted out of its joint, and he didn't do anything to cause it to happen, he was just playing it normally. (IE throw it on the ground, whatever) I prefer neck thrus, then bolt ons, then if i had to, a set neck. the least amount of glue used for the neck the better, imo. the only time i would think about a set neck is if i had a guitar with a deep set neck tenon, like, as far in as the bridge pick up even, and then have a 1 piece body for and unbroken sound board.

I prefer neck-thru better sound and playability IMO. the one advantage i think to bolt-on is there easy to repalce or upgrade.

interesting i had a friend that happened to at a gig mid song with a gibson les paul studio

ne way :newbie: when ever i heard neck thru i always thought that something to do with string thru :smack: can anybody tell me wat it is im soo confused i only know set neck i like them better than bolt ons more sustain now more midpriced guitars are set necks too

Depends on the axe for me, really. I like the set neck on my Schecter, and the Neck thru on my Jackson. Just different, really. Apples and oranges.

I prefer bolts myself, it just gives you better high clarity in my opinion when compared to a set neck. Neck throughs on the other hand do sound amazing, if you like the sound of your neck wood that is, every one I've ever touched had a maple dominated tone because of the necks. I dare to say they only had 15% of the tone coming from the body wood, just a waste of good wood to me. When I have a guitar with a good tight bolt in my hands it really is better to me, I don't mind a strat style bolt all that much but it's even better with the way companies like Ibanez and PRS are doing it, you lose no high end fret access.

They're all good, but I prefer neck-through since it provides better sustain, fret access, and stability.

For the feel i prefer neck thru.It's just more comfortable and of course the sustain is amazing for solos. But as long as a guitar sounds good and to my liking i don't really care.

Neck-through would be my first choice, but my second would be set-through (which my Ltd on the left has). Which, is a set neck, but with the contored heel so you get the same access as on a neck-through.

I thougth a set-trough was a neck with a really long stud that was mounted trough the whole guitar :smack:

Seriously, is the difference between these construction methods really crucial to the sound? Just asking

I dislike the neck-through construction, if the neck's a stiff wood like maple. Today's neck-throughs can't make the wings resonate enough, so you rather hear the neck and not the body, and that way the sound will be too bright. But if the neck's mahogany, I guess I'd like that. (EDIT: Oops, SwedeNuck has already written this down here.)

As for the other two, I can't decide. I like LP's very much, though.
