Your opinion on Entwistle HV58 Gold pups in a TSB58

The Tanglewood TSB58 Les Paul I have which wasn't extremely cheap at €650 has 2 gold entwistle humbuckers installed. I'm only gaining interest in doing mods lately and I'll be starting with my strat first, but I'm curious as to what people think of the HV58 pickups as my Les Paul has them and I do think the neck pickup sounds good both clean and driven but I wouldn't have heard Les Paul models played in person much. What pickups would you people recommend to use in Les Paul guitars. I know Les Paul are supposed to sound vintage and be better for blues so they aren't supposed to have the higher gains like the bridge pickup in a strat would for example. Basically just want my guitars to be the best they can be if affordable and I've heard a lot of people still changing pickups in actual Gibson and Fender models too so just wanna know what you people think.

Dude, the first thing to do is play it for a bit. If it sounds good to you, then consider not changing them. Unless of course they lack some specific quality that you're trying to get.

Forgot to menion I've had it for 2 years already but I'm just wondering do people find them any good. Like I'm going to use my strat as a little project for now but I've no problem spending money on them considering the price of the real name ones compared to what I paid.

Well, not to sound trite, but do you like them? If not, what don't you like ie. muddy, thin, too compressed?

Not familiar with the HV58 but, my ASN-57 stacked noiseless pups are great to me. That experience makes me want to try those 58s in one of my next projects. All the Entwistle pups went up in price 3X a couple years ago. I got my set for $32 they're $90+ now. I thought they were worth the $90 when I first put them in my Strat. 3 months later they actually were $90.

I do like them I think the neck pickup is good and it gives a good clean and a nice driven tone high up the neck but I'm not entirely sure about the bridge side of things. Like it sounds a lot more muffled driven than I'd expect but then again it's probably supposed to be like that since strats are different and have the extra pickup (not to mention single coil). The bridge pickup does give a nice twang played cleanly it just sounds a bit more muffled playing distorted but I do have a distortion pedal that can completely change the tone and make it less muffled. I don't even exactly mean muffled more like the tone is already on 10 and can't go higher if you know what I'm trying to say. I can't really compare the LP to strats though because they're 2 different guitars for 2 different genres. My strat is better for certain playing and my LP is better for other stuff. Suppose that's the joys of having the 2 guitars :)

Anyway I'd just like to know what people are using in their LP's out of curiosity is all.

Edit: if it matters the bridge pickup is really low down and the neck one is raised about 10mm up

I would try either raising the pole pieces or raising the pickup a bit first. Then, if it still sounds muffled an too compressed, then you can start to know what you want in a replacement pickup.

Yeah I'll try that first since the neck one actually sounds good at it's current setting. I do really like the guitar and my strat has got a lot more room for improvement than my LP so I might just try raising the bridge pickup for now on the LP as you said and see where it goes from there. Thanks for the replies.

No prob. If you still want to change them, or just the bridge, there'll be plenty of advice forthcoming from folks here.
I like the 59 in an LP.

I'm gonna have a go at that today and see what happens. It turns out it's not just me though a Google search shows a lot of results for an LP lacking treble/clarity. Basically just the higher end of the sound as I thought.

Re: Your opinion on Entwistle HV58 Gold pups in a TSB58

Ok this is a bit ironic but somehow all that works on my les Paul today is the treble option and nothing else. The middle and rhythm selections aren't outputting any sound. Is this likely to just be a faulty selection switch since the middle also isn't outputting sound?

I haven't even adjusted the pickups yet I haven't touched it since yesterday and it was working yesterday.

Should I just make a thread in another section about this for now since this is a pickup section and it's the switch at fault?
