Leo Fender went with the CRL three-way lever switch because, being Military Surplus, it was freely available, inexpensive and, ahem, field tested under battlefield conditions. If the switch can survive deployment in an army field radio, it might possibly survive touring life with a rock 'n' roll band.
In my opinion, the problem with some of the modern CRL-style lever selector switches is the replacement of the spring with that roller over a notched surface to find the five positions.
