Your opinion on the KLON Centaur Overdrive?

Re: Your opinion on the KLON Centaur Overdrive?

I've played a KTR on a few occasions, but I've never owned one. It's a quality sound that stomps all over the other Klones on the market, but the high price and low availability don't make it a worthwhile purchase to me, and many other buyers.

Do I want one right now? Not really. But I will admit that it has always been a dream of mine to stuff a KTR and a Whiteface ProCo Rat circuit into one housing a la KoT. I would then commission someone to paint the casing to be a hybrid of the Centaur symbol with the Whiteface Rat theme and have my dream distortion right there at my feet .
Ahhh, someday...

Re: Your opinion on the KLON Centaur Overdrive?

I play 80's metal with really hot pickups and a ton of preamp gain. I don't understand why anybody would like a Klon.

I play metal, sludge, death metal and the occasional doom with gain and or hot pickups too. I still find the klon likeable in certain applications (e.g. different tools for different jobs).

A friend has a KTR and I’ve had a few Klones. Frankly, I don’t think it’s in another level. I would probably have bought one if it hadn’t been because of the (IMHO childish and arrogant) phrase on the pedal. That plus being more expensive plus not being IMHO special, I’ve put my money in Archer, Wampler and others.

Go visit some other Klon threads and you'll get what I was referring to.

Re: Your opinion on the KLON Centaur Overdrive?

A friend of mine owns one, he plays in a blues band, always sounded great through his Fender DRRI. Once the value started to skyrocket, he pulled it off of his pedalboard, and replaced with a Soul Food, again, still sounded great...

This can happen, you can get kits sans enclosures from generalguitargadgets.com for the original version of both, then buy the appropriate Hammond box to put them in. In fact, what's it worth to you, I could do that for you except for the custom paint.

Thanks for the offer, but I think this project will be a bit of a personal journey for me. The Rat side definitely won't be a 1:1 replica, and I might have to experiment with exact electrical values on the KTR side. The only thing stopping me from doing it now is price and time.

Totally understand, just saying that it's not that far out of reach, the kits are ~$50 each, much cheaper than having custom PCBs made. It's easy to customize kits as you are building. A double size Hammond style enclosure is probably ~$20, the most expensive part is the time.

Cool, I might have to look into those then.

Tried a bunch of them....in all kinds of setups....
Kinda indifferent to them....it is just one of these things....it has become a religion for some.
It is just a piece of gear that works for some and not for others....

Re: Your opinion on the KLON Centaur Overdrive?

Now that the prices are coming down I might grab a Klon and try one out.

Re: Your opinion on the KLON Centaur Overdrive?

I think maybe people misuse a Klon, but haters? man I cant see it -that growl in the low mids is special -really special.

I think most people who don't like them -don't like all the detail they can reveal -suddenly they are hearing little flubs and inconsistencies in their playing -in that case back off the tone knob and use an EQ pedal and roll off the 3.2k and especially the 6.4k to use the growl of the Klon without the detail.

Re: Your opinion on the KLON Centaur Overdrive?

I don't notice anything significant with a Klon or AM KOT. Nothing to justify a 1.5 year wait.

1.5 year wait? what? uggggg -yeah.

In fairness, I've ONLY used a KLON or true cLone with a Marshall JCM800, VOXAC15/30, Fender Twin, Vibrolux, Deluxe Reverb, Hot Rod, and Princeton, a few classic Oranges, and a Traynor YBA-1

Amps all known for wanting to make a baby with a transparent overdrive.

So I guess results could be completely different on other AMPS -especially with modern rectifier circuits, multiple gain stages, and Solid State rigs.

So theres that.

It's mostly the artificially created hype that draws people away from them in my eyes. A Soul Food will do everything a Klon can do with just a few small modifications to the gain stage.

Maybe I should have been clearer -I was referring to the Klones too. and any transparent overdrive based on the ingenuity in the original Klon circuit.

I think Soul Food is fantastic -especially for it's ridiculous price.

I mean people who hate Klons AND Klones for their transparent and revealing sound seems like they aren't using it in the best application or I guess as JB from Hell made me realize, maybe Klons aren't that great with the non Vintage and Classic Tube amps -like SS, and Modern gain and pre stages.

-but I can certainly see people loathing Klons for the Hype more than for the actual results of a good transparent overdrive.

Re: Your opinion on the KLON Centaur Overdrive?

Yeah, Soul Foods are great. The best part is how they were initially introduced to combat the Klon hype, with their low prices, included adapter, and internal buffer/true bypass switch.
