Don't gripe. You have your piece of gear. Make yourself feel better and consider the price for shipping and handling. It was the handling that you paid for

If you agreed to the $40 in shipping, and paid for the item with no quibbles about the price, and when it arrived you found that the ACTUAL shipping cost was $60, would you call up the seller and offer him an extra $20?!!

When you bought the item including shipping, you made a contract with the buyer. Be a man (of integrity) and live up to your word (contract)!

I reuse packing material all the time when I ship items, as long as I feel the material can do the job properly. Based on your description, it did.
I agree with the fact that the guy could've paid 40$ or more depending on the destination.
I also agree that you agreed to pay the costs, in this case a fixed 40$.

IMHO, respectfully, you have no reasons to complain in any way. Doing so would make you a big baby... again, IMHO and respectfully.
