Your opinions on SH-6 for metal

Hi folks,

I'm thinking of installing a Duncan Distortion (bridge) in my Hamer Standard USA guitar. I would like your opinions and experiences with this pickup.

The guitar has a mahogany body with a very thin maple top, mahogany neck and rosewood fretboard. The neck pickup is a APH-1 which suits me fine. I play through a Randall RG50TC all-tube combo (no effects).

The music that I play is Metallica, Ozzy (Randy & Zakk), Whitesnake, AC/DC, The Cult, Guns 'n' Roses and some Pantera.

I already have Customs and Custom Customs installed in my other guitars and would like to give the Distortion a try.

Thanks in advance.
Nick

In short, it kicks ass. If you're after aggression, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Re: Your opinions on SH-6 for metal

I've heard comments that it's a bit compressed. I'm not really sure what that means. Thank you for your input. Much appreciated.

Re: Your opinions on SH-6 for metal

It's probably my favorite pickup for high-gain and Metal-type stuff.

Re: Your opinions on SH-6 for metal

Compared to the Custom, the Distortion will have more mids and less/ tighter low end. It's also more compressed than the Custom. Basically all that means is you can rail on the strings and it doesn't get that much louder, like so (output on the vertical scale, input on the horizontal scale):

That is sooooooo right I can't stand it. Plug it in, turn it on and turn it up. Can't miss.

sounds like it will be awesome... maybe a lil modern for ac/dc.....but perfect for everything else....dint randy use a duncan distortion anyways?

Not a problem if it sounds too modern for AC/DC as long as it can cover the other bands.

Re: Your opinions on SH-6 for metal

this is the one to get if you're into high gain/ volume settings. i'm enjoying the neck counterpart too.

Re: Your opinions on SH-6 for metal

Well, you cant go wrong with a DD for metal. the name speaks for itself. thats all i can say

Re: Your opinions on SH-6 for metal

It's the only pickup I buy for Les Paul type guitars.........Been using them for 16+ years. I however did not like them in a strat, but thats a totaly different guitar, I've had good luck with JB's in strats. That's the formula I stick by.....

Thanks to everyone for posting your thoughts. I'll order one today.

Yep, that's an amazing gear setup for metal...
You can get good tone just by looking at the rig...

Randy used one.

IMHO, it's the best Duncan for the styles that you are asking about.
