Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

Re: Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

You're asking two questions.

The first. All of them.

The second. Too many to name. All of my guitars are different with different pickups and they all sound awesome to me.

But... my current favorite is my LP with the Alt 8 into the 800.

Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

How about you guys, what's that one pickup that you can hit a chord and instantly be reminded "this is what electric guitar is supposed to sound like"?

Re: Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

I like to use different guitars and pickups for different sounds, but the one that feels like home is my Explorer with the Duncan Custom.

Re: Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

Two weeks ago I would have proudly yelled SCREAMIN' DEMON! at this one.
But then, I recently replaced it's magnet with a UOA5 and I like it better.

And to make things even worse, I recently played a PRS S2 with whatever pickups PRS puts in those things, that sounded so goddamn perfect and had such a beautiful, bold and singing response in the midrange that it makes me realize I don't know much about any of this.

So there you go. No clue, man.

Re: Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

The Duncan Distortion seems to just have the voice for the all the songs in my head. It's mean, loud, and cuts like a knife. I've tried to replace it, but I just can't.

Re: Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

Anything sounds like me as long as it's me who's playing, it's not super-high output, and it's a bridge pickup. It's both frustrating and reassuring. The most like me would probably be a Dimarzio Area 61 bridge for standard tuning and my custom Alnico IV Buddha Humbucker for C-standard.

Some PAF variant. I recently heard such a woody tone from my burstbuckers I almost **** myself. The tone is "thin", but not brittle. It's the clearest voice any guitar has ever given me.

Full and warm but also with good midrange and just enough high end to hear all the detail. glorious.

Re: Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

I have really taken a liking to the new Hybrid. And, I have diff likes for diff guitars and applications. But if I had to use/choose one go to pickup that I have always found what I need/want with, that would be the Custom 8

Re: Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

Not yet. I haven't tried enough different things, and there's too much variation in guitars and amps.

A good PAF.

Same here brother. Funny.....it has taken me YEARS to figure it out. Looking back it kinda makes sense: I have always loved PAF-ish pickups like the Custom, Custom 5 and then the S-Deco. My epiphany came about a year ago now playing a Seth Lover equipped Lester. I really got to put it through its paces and fell in love. Three of my four main guitars now are completely PAF loaded now.

Re: Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

there's too much variation in guitars and amps.

It would also be true to say that, given an unfamiliar amp through which to play, most guitarists would adapt their picking hand technique in an attempt to get closer to their preferred sound.

1979 T-Top in my DK-2.. rather attached to it.. the 'pup just sounds very creamy and harmonically pleasing to the ears..only pickup i have that just sounds like what i hear in my head.. now .. if i can play what i hear in my head.. all would be well

Re: Your pickup, the one that always "sounds like you"

I don't think I've still found it. I tend to gravitate towards upper-mid focused pickups like the EMG 81 and some of its variants (I particularly like the 81TW and the regular 81, but I can live with the JH-B or 81X as well) or the Duncan JB and Distortion, but they've all got tiny things I'd like to tweak about them all.

I'd say my top two being close to perfect have been the 81TW and the Duncan JB, but I'd like a JB with a tiny bit less compression, slightly more airy top and slightly less stuffy low-mids or an 81TW with a hint of that tasty Alnico V growl/slight sag/sponginess.

Although it sounds weird because it's a signature pickup, it's definitely the Custom Shop Alpha/Omega set that I've got right now. I've tried it through so many different setups since I got it, but it always sounds like my playing. I had been looking for a set of pickups that has the characteristics of the Alpha/Omega ever since I went on my "tone quest," and I definitely found it with them.
