Your SD Custom shop creation?

I had a modified Pearly Gates made about 5 weeks ago. It started as a stock Pearly Gates, replaced the A2 with an A5 and wound to 12.0k.

What have some of you guys done with the Custom Shop?

Re: Your SD Custom shop creation?

Two of my favorites that I own and use are an alnico 2 Hot For Tele Tapped and an alnico 2 Jerry Donahue Tele wound for just a touch more treble and spaciousness.

I love them both.

I liked the stock Jerry Donahue but wanted one with a little livlier feel and slightly brighter tone.

And I liked the stock A5 Hot For Tele Tapped but wanted one with a slightly thicker, and less biting tone. I read that Seymour used an A2 Hot For Tele Tapped in an Esquire so I ordered one and I like it very much.

Yo that custom pearly gates sounds like it would grip it and rip it. How are you liking it so far?

I haven't installed it *yet* ? I have been in a post divorce overhaul and have had to put my guitar hobby on hold.

I asked SD Custom shop to give me a "Gimme all Your Lovin' " tone humbucker on the "Design your own.." form. I bet it's gonna' really sing once it's installed

Re: Your SD Custom shop creation?

For sure man Pearly Gates with an A5 mag sounds amazing as it is. But also at 12k? It just might become the next favorite pickup in the world if Im imagining the tone accurately. Id love to hear an audio sample when you get it going, if you can.

As soon as I get that 'bucker installed i'll get an audio clip posted on here.

The custom shop was super helpful with this pickup. They suggested starting with a stock PG and giving it more power PLUS an A5. It made sense so I told them to roll with it. The only thing I am worried about is the mids being too high or too scooped-- I asked them to moderately scoop the mids.

We'll see :)

Re: Your SD Custom shop creation?

I'd like a Duncan Distortion with a bit less compression and an A8 magnet (Basically a Bare Knuckle Painkiller with an A8) for the bridge pickup.

For the neck pickup, I'd like a pickup that is similar in tone to my Bare Knuckle Abraxas, but I want it to sound more open when you add gain. Unfortunately, I don't think that that sort of pickup is possible. It'd would be an interesting experiment though.

Re: Your SD Custom shop creation?

youre a5 12k pup sounds cool but it isnt a pearly gates. theres no way to get 12k worth of #42pe on a normal bobbin so its pretty different. ive had a bunch of custom shop pups made over the years and they have been wonderful. the 10k and 9.4k antiquity buckers and tapped 9.6k/6.6k #42 pe a2 strat pups are some of my favorites

You're right. My pickup isn't a PG. The stock PG was basically the foundation they started with.

Those hot antiquities sound killer. I had a stock antiquity humbucker in the bridge of an old guitar
once and I liked it--it was low output but it was a smooth, warm pickup

Re: Your SD Custom shop creation?

I have a double screw 59/Custom Hybrid with a roughcast A5 magnet, that is rw/rp. It sounds really great. Then I also have 2 Slash prototypes that he used (and rejected). I don't have a guitar for them, though.

I am jealous. The prototypes sound like cool collector's items if nothing else

Re: Your SD Custom shop creation?

can custom shop take your broken pickup and turn it into something?

depending on what the pup is sure. if its a duncan then yes. if its another brand then it depends. if its epoxy potted then probably not

Re: Your SD Custom shop creation?

They do, at this time, offer rewinds on pickups (provided they can get to the coil).

Re: Your SD Custom shop creation?

I have four sets of pearloid p rails. Only the last has logo on em.

of course ~ I could build U one that's super easy to play & Shreds

Re: Your SD Custom shop creation?

I've got Da Minx[es]... largely due to my calling them that :p

Neck is currently being redone, so can't speculate on that one, but the closest I can describe the bridge would be like the opening guitar to Always On The Run. At least with me playing through my gear that is :)

I've some ideas for the middle humbucker spot to go with them, but that's secret squirrel. So much so, that I've tagged the squirrels, and am monitoring their every move. Lil furry f...[sic]...

Re: Your SD Custom shop creation?

Strat Rail humbucker with a S Deco wind/aged a5 magnet. MJ wound it at about 11.3K. Ballsy "PAF" to a T. Rails have their own thing going and the moderate output brought out the best in both.
