Re: Your top 5 amplifiers!

Great minds think alike. You can only design the perfect amp so many times before you start repeating yourself.

Re: Your top 5 amplifiers!

I think the best amps I've ever plugged into were...

1995 Bogner Ecstasy
Bogner Duende Seco Mojado
Komet 60 head
65 Amps London head/212
Tone King Meteor II

Re: Your top 5 amplifiers!

* Fender Champ 12 ... I love these little amps! Chunky cleans and a screaming lead channel, and it weighs 25 pounds.

* Music Man HD-150. I sold a 68 SF Bassman because the MM did everything the Bassman could, and some things the Bassman couldn't do. 150 watts, switchable to 65, one side for bass, one for guitar, MV, makes a HELL of a good bass amp through a good speaker, sounds good at either low volumes or shaking the room, and willl drive four 8ohm 4x12's (or, four 4ohm bass cabs) just in case I ever need it :D

* Gibson Goldtone 30 watt amp with 1x12 and 1x10. Good GOD that amp sounded good.

* Fender Deluxe tweed. I played one from the 50s at Wildwood Music one day, and understood all the fuss.

78(?) MV SF Pro Reverb. Some of you are cringing at that, but that thing sounded like I always thought electric guitar should. Full, cutting yet smooth, dark yet bright enough, the OD with the master on 3 and the volume on 9 with my LP was killer, and half of the time I forgot to turn on my OD boxes cause the amp sounded so friggin good. Great time playing that amp.

Re: Your top 5 amplifiers!

This is SO much harder than picking top 5 guitars for me. I could own 20 great amps and probably still find 5 that I want.

There's also the problem that there are lots of great small amps, lots of great medium-sized combos, lots of great big heads, and so on. I have a top five list of each.

For the sake of this exercise, I will say "top 5 amps that I could use as my main gigging amp."

1. Mesa Mark V
2. Mesa Stiletto Ace (this IS my main gigging amp)
3. 65 Amps SoHo HP (I would need a few more pedals to make this work)
4. Two Rock Custom Reverb Signature v.2
5. Mesa Electra Dyne

Gibson Goldtone 30[/B] watt amp with 1x12 and 1x10. Good GOD that amp sounded good.

I didn't include it in my list, but it's worthy of mention. The late 90's Gibson Goldtone amps that were heavily endorsed by Joe Perry.....amazing amps!
I think I even like it better than Vox and Matchless. My GA30RVS will always be a staple in my Gibson guitar collection. It's (2) 15W EL-84 power sections running in tandem with stereo reverb that sounds huge. The transformers were even made by Demeter.....which most don't know.

Re: Your top 5 amplifiers!

Zinky Superfly
Zinky Blue Velvet (own one)
Fender Prosonic (own one have owned several)
Sam Amp

Re: Your top 5 amplifiers!

Going on what I've heard on albums and experience.
VOX AC30
Fender Twin
First Marshall MV Amps/Early JCM 800 (I've heard they were basically the same depending on year)
Matchless DC-30 or similar (My Frenzal is the closest amp to this I've tried although it probably is a fair bit different)
Mesa Rectifier (Never played one in person and I know they can sound bad but if I wanted Modern High Gain I'd look here first)

Re: Your top 5 amplifiers!

My favorite 4 that I've ever played or owned are:

Bogner Shiva (own now)
Bogner Ecstasy
Engl Richie Blackmore
H&K Triamp Mk I (used to own)

And I'd like to play a Diezel VH4 and Elmwood Modena in order to add to that list.

Re: Your top 5 amplifiers!

My list is really, really boring.

VOX AC30
Marshall Plexi 1987x
Fender Vibrolux
Two Rock JM Sig
Bogner Uberschall

If I had to buy an amp tomorrow:

Bogner Shiva EL34 - because it does a lot of things well and sounds good.

Agreed. That's why I finally bit the bullet and bought one. Been playing it for several hours each day for a week now and love it more every time I plug into it. Plus, I LOVE that it's simple. WAY too many amps now have a million knobs and switches. Which is cool for versatility, but I find that I get distracted fiddling with all of that crap when it's there. So I got the Shiva because its tone is awesome, and its simplicity will allow me to just friggin PLAY at my gigs and not be fiddling around with knobs. :1:

Re: Your top 5 amplifiers!

i don't get the whole vintage thing, innovation didn't die in the 60's

my 5
fender supersonic
mesa mark IIc+
hiwatt custom 50
fender twin RI (never played an original)
Marshall 18 watt TMB clone (ceriatone.com)

Re: Your top 5 amplifiers!

Marshall plexi 1959 into slant front w/Celestion greenbacks
Fender Bassman tweed 4x10 w/Jensens
Boogie Mk III wood/wicker
Carvin Vai vers. 1 (Yeah, that's right, I said it... What? What?)

Ampeg VT-22... I had one of these. 100w RMS @ 8Ω, switchable from 16 to 4.
Brutal. I never dimed it in my life -- didn't have to.
