Your vote for the BEST AMP out of the box, NO TWEAKING!

Re: Your vote for the BEST AMP out of the box, NO TWEAKING!

What's the point?

I find that stuff that reveal it's self too quickly is also the things that get boring first...

Good tone is possible with any amp right out of the box provided everything works like it should. Great tone needs some tweaking.

My brown 3x10" Bandmaster when I got it out of the shipping box...

Celtic Aislinn.

Come on 3 knobs!! how can you go wrong!

The Dr.Z is bone stock and sounded phenomenal, but I did just retube the whole thing so maybe that doesn't count.

I want to know what you think the BEST AMP OUT OF THE BOX IS... NO TWEAKS ALLOWED, NOT EVEN NEW TUBES OR THE CONTROLS. That might eliminate some Marshalls and Boogies for sure.

Esp. some Boogie where all of mine require days AND manuals to get the right settings.

I mean an amp that goes with most any speaker (or comes with the right combo), and just goes into the club and does it!

My votes: Mesa Mark 2c+ combo, Blockhead, Orange AD30, Soldano Avenger, VHT Deliverance, Bogner Shiva, Vintage Fender Super Reverbs, Twins, Bassmans, Vibroverbs, and Deluxes (mid to early 60s).

I have 4 amps that I would not have any problems going into any club and using. It depends on how big and how much versatility I would need. IF I was doing a straight blues GIG in a small club, I would bring my 67' Deluxe Reverb. If I needed more power I would use my Super Reverb, If I were doing more of a hard Rock arrangement I would use my Marshall 900 50W combo. If I needed to do all of the above I would bring my Bogner Shiva!

Where's Gearjoneser? The Trace Velocette/Gibson Goldtone is a plug in and wail monster. Talk about no tweaking? There's only two knobs. Set them literally anywhere, and you're making great noise. Different cabinets, guitars, they're all compatible.

And yes I agree with Nightburst that it's completely irrelevant.:laugh2:

It's funny, I think GJ bought the same Goldtone I had my eyes on as well. After hearing how good he thinks it is, I regret not going for it myself... lol.
Plus the LOOK cool as hell.

Re: Your vote for the BEST AMP out of the box, NO TWEAKING!

Yep, definitely the Goldtone 15 or 30. It's the only amp where I only touch 2 things, the On switch and the volume. The amp is voiced like a Vox or Marshall with all the controls set where they're supposed to be. The controls are so UNimportant that they're on the back of the amp!
To me, it's one of the most revealing amps to listen to pickups with, because it's very neutral, yet toneful. It's just 4 EL-84's going to 2 Celestion Vin 30's. There's just one 12AX7 for the preamp, and a second one that turns on when you hit the boost switch. The other 2 pre tubes are for reverb......and I'm not kidding, the reverb sounds as good as Fender reverb.

wow Joe, Matchless didn't make this list for you?
I be shocked

Hiwatt, DR501, DR103, DR201.
No tweaks required, big and open out of the box!
VOX AC-15 and VOX AC-30, also go straight out of the box, Marshall 1959, Marshall 1987, just plug and play.
Fender Tweed Twin amp, also just working, both the big and smaller version.
Park 75 and Park 50....same thing as the their Marshall brothers.
Orange 100 watts top, huge!

For ease of use, I think I will take my Mesa Mark III Coliseum head and its 412 C90/EVM Halfback cab.

I think the "out of the box" thing is a bit meaningless, because most vintage amps will have had at least new tubes and perhaps some modifications as well.

If the stage is big enough for the 412, the Mark III is flexible enough to handle any of the music I play, and any of my guitars, at any volume. It's a very sweet amp.

Mesa Mark III? Mesas take tons of tweaking. I don't mean that a vintage amp doesn't need re-tubing. some amps need tons of hours of tube swapping and EQing. Mark series are NOTORIOUS that way.

I am shocked at all the people mentioning Marshalls. A lot of the RI 1959's and mid 70s versions are so inconsistent. You can buy one and it can sound off base.

I forgot about Orange, I have liked many I have played - just not enough to own one.

Re: Your vote for the BEST AMP out of the box, NO TWEAKING!

i played my recto in the store and found it to be "so raunchy" ....a plexi on steroids kinda sound...plexi with more gain...anyways, i couldn't believe how distorted this thing sounded (and so good) then i realized it was on RAW ...aka the LOWEST gain setting on channel 2...from there on out it was a wet dream come true....without a porn star on top of me...and without the sex...actually it was more just like, "...****in-A!" i got metallica, seether, slash, angus, jimi, nirvana, all that **** with ease...im in love with a 50 watter and i dont care who knows it...the thing rips!

As to your comment about Mesa Mark IIIs, I just simply could not disagree more. All you have to do to set up a Mark III is refer to the owner's manual and set the knobs at the sweet spots! Mesa's done all the work for you! Once I've balanced my LEAD MASTER with the RHYTHM CHANNEL, I can switch back and forth between my G&L Legacys, 335s, LPs--and guitar I own--and have great tone. I might have to use one of the PULL switches when switching from humbuckers to single coils--but I ALWAYS get compliments on my tone when I use one of my Mark IIIs.

As for Marshalls, I think the one real epiphany I had was using a friend's JCM900 100 watt 112 combo and my Les Paul '55 Special with hot, vintage P-90s. I was really struggling with it, until I realized that even though the tone I was getting out of the amp may not have been exactly the tone I was looking for, there was no denying that every tone that came out of the that amp was very, very good.

The only mod I've ever done with my Marshalls is to clip off the brite cap off the GAIN knob. This smooths out the tone and makes it consistent over the GAIN knob's range. One JCM 800 112 combo--a 4010 I had, sounded more like a Boogie than most of my Boogies! When it was cranked, it had a very smooth singing tone that would have had Larry Carleton smiling.

I should also tell you that I am the KISS OF DEATH when it comes to vintage Orange amps, LOL! I think over the last 40 years or so, I've played five Orange amps--and everyone has DIED on me while I was playing it! About six, seven years ago--I found a great deal on a beautiful vintage Orange combo. I've always loved the look--anyway, about five minutes of playing it in the store and it started to wail and moan in a most ungodly manner and then died! Talk about embarrassing! Anyway, that was the last straw for me with Orange. Love the look, but there's something in the Cosmos that has consistently warned me away from them! Message received!
