Youtube certainly allow for high quality audio. Some clips are really good, and a lot of songs are there with just the audio obviously from a CD and then some pics.

From my observation the major problem here is that people are not willing to go through the trouble of re-synchronizing a high quality audio recording with the video and then choose to simply use the audio recording as done by the camera. That can mean an external microphone but obviously in many cases it does not. Even when using a dedicated microphone on a DSLR now you have it away from the amp.

It is a far cry from properly micing an amp.

Good list... there is another one... a single guy who demos higher end stuff... really great sounding demos but cant think of his name off the top of my head. He doesn't talk either!!

Yes, the 'home-made' videos are usually pretty bad. Those done professionally, and in studio type environments can be very informative/enlightening, IMO.

The only consistent 'bad' aspect (even in the professionally made videos) is that tone usually is very much tied to volume and with recording gear, it's nearly impossible to sense what the volume is. You may hear a tone that you can't live without and not know that to achieve it requires a volume that you can't live with!

In the end, I see the videos as one way to make up your 'short list' to further selection by a hands-on demo.

Even the best audio quality sound samples I have heard on youtube are really NOT going to give you a good impression of what an amp or pedal sounds like because you are listening to it through a computer speaker. The way I judge these is I go to a store and play through it so I can really hear what it is doing then I can judge whether I can use it or not.

I agree 100% Dave. It's the only way to get a true read on the sound.

I go with consistency rather than quality, as judging quality based on youtube vids can't be done too well.

I go with Gearmanndude, then head over to ProGuitar and then browse the rest of the internetz to see how the gear works for them.

The worst is when they talk to much. I'm not here for the blah blah blah, I'm here for the play.

I have always thought it was a waste of time. There are too many post-production things you can do, and too many amateurs who couldn't make Jimmy Page's personal collection sound good, to give a realistic idea of what the gear's gona do in my hands with my other gear.

I just insist on buying gear for cheap enough that I can try it, see what I think about it, and sell it at no loss if it's not for me.
