Zakk Wylde Overdrive vs. Modded SD-1

I just bought a Marshall JCM 800 and I need help decided which overdrive to buy. I'm thinking either the MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrive or a Keeley Modded SD-1. What's everyone's opinion? By the way, if anyone has any clips of these pedals through a JCM 800, lemme hear! Thanks! Duncan Forums ****in Rule

What styles of music do you play? What kind of guitar do you have? It really depends on a lot of factors. I'd go with the Modded SD-1. I like how they have a bright and clear sound. The MXR ZW OD is just gonna give you more gain for your JCM 800.

Re: Zakk Wylde Overdrive vs. Modded SD-1

If you want to be like Zakk Wylde, get the box for your JCM because I'm pretty sure that's what he uses live.

Otherwise, there are much cheaper (and probably better solutions). Just buy a used SD-1 online and have John Spina mod it.

Re: Zakk Wylde Overdrive vs. Modded SD-1

Right now I'm running a SD97-modded SD-1 thru my JCM800, and I couldn't be happier. I've not heard the new ZW-OD, but I know you could get an SD-1 w/ mods cheaper than a new Dunlop pedal. The SD-1 will do anything from mild overdrive, to gained-up metal just fine. I'm sure there are other OD's out there that are phenominal -sounding, but they'll cost ya some change, for sure.

I had a Keeley-modded SD-1, and it was too HI-FI for my tastes (then again, I was using a Burr-Brown op-amp). I really liked the soundclips I heard of John's SD-1 mods...very brown. I'm a big fan of the whole "philosophy" behind John's mods, because he basically just improves the tone of the pedal by using better caps and "proper" op-amps while remaining true to the original sound. Plus, the work he does is just as good as the big guys without the big guy prices.

Who is John Spina? The mods I have looked at so far are from Tone-Jam, Keeley, and Indyguitarist. What are everyone's favorite mods for the SD-1? If it helps, I want a modern rock sound but also be able to switch it up and get an 80's shred tone.

i heard the zakk OD has really nasty feedback problems

Thanks MRID...I'm sitting here reading the posts about the SD1,and I appreciate your comments alot...That's very nice of you buddy...You're right.I use the best components that I can get on the board, metal film resistors(less noise)but I also re-voice the pedal for more lows, gain, balls, and an overall better tone..The chip gets changed also..

Re: Zakk Wylde Overdrive vs. Modded SD-1

Hmm.. I had an Sd-1 wayy back.. it was good without any mods at all..
I think the one Zakk had wasn't modded, either. I can't really be sure, though, I'm not that big of a fan.

The MXR thing is just an "improved" sd-1. Zakk says that it doesn't mess with the amps sound, gives him more bottom end and feedback/sustain.

I can't tell much about Keeley mods, but I have a ds-1 that I Keeley modded myself.. it's not bad at all, uses special caps to keep away the noise and has some other magic done to it..

I'd imagine the MXR and the Keeley mod come close to eachother, since they both are based on the same pedal.. I'd go for the SD-1, myself..

Re: Zakk Wylde Overdrive vs. Modded SD-1

Also, how are the Maxon Overdrive pedals? More specifically, the ROD-880 and the OD-820.

Re: Zakk Wylde Overdrive vs. Modded SD-1

To help a little more, I have a specific sound in mind. As weird as it sounds, Im looking to get a tone similiar to the chugging guitars in Andrew WK's "She Is Beautiful". Any ideas of an overdrive that would give me that buzz saw type sound?

The build quality on the Maxon OD-808 is pretty poor, IMO. I haven't tried the 820, but it looks much more solid.

Heads up....My modded SD1s don't have any "buzz saw" tones....You may want to look elsewhere?
