zebrawood fretboard on an SG style - Yeah or Nah ?

Re: zebrawood fretboard on an SG style - Yeah or Nah ?

Got a bit more done over the weekend ,carved the rest of the bevels, drilled holes for the bridge and tailpiece mounting ,routed the pickup cavity and glued the neck in

Next up is carving the rear neck profile - a job I used to be apprehensive about, but now I'm quite looking forward too

Got the rear neck profile done this weekend ,came out very nice -I particularly like the look of the the volute. and feels so comfortable with the heel well blended in a way you can't do with a bolt on neck, 22.5mm @1st fret - 24.5mm @18th fret ,next up a fret level so I can wire it up and get some strings on for a trial before finishing begins

Hey neighbor, i see you have also been busy working on your projects this fine weekend. This time of year is the best

That looks ****ing awesome man. seriously mint work.

Re: zebrawood fretboard on an SG style - Yeah or Nah ?

ChAoZ, really like the progress you've made on this project. It looks like something my wallet would cry about after hearing the price tag. Solid work man, solid work. That volute was a sharp addition.

thanks for the compliment ,I'm not sure about the rules for selling on the forum - but everything I make is for sale

Re: zebrawood fretboard on an SG style - Yeah or Nah ?

Back to working on this one ,I got a bit disheartened with the build as the last piece of Zebrawood I had was too soft and the frets pressed right into the board in places ,removing a fretboard is always a risky job but it came off clean with no damage to the neck.New piece of Zebrawood seems a bit harder - I didn't like the fact the grains weren't straight like the last piece but it's growing on me - probably leave this one natural too

Re: zebrawood fretboard on an SG style - Yeah or Nah ?

I had some samples of zebrawood sento to me awhile ago. Amazing looking wood.

Re: zebrawood fretboard on an SG style - Yeah or Nah ?

I really like the look of that particular piece of zebrawood. I especially like that the grain ISN'T straight.

Love the volute on your "SG".

Re: zebrawood fretboard on an SG style - Yeah or Nah ?

I'm using gold hardware so was going to go with gold metal knobs or Gibson style gold plastic ,Do you think gold frets would be a bit too much ?

Gold frets are never a bit too much. I have them on my main guitar which features a ziricote fretboard attached to a wenge neck on a black korina body. I say go all out.

I do love quality exotic woods indeed. My hard drive crashed that had most of my good photos on it last summer. Here is what I have left (one of these days I will take some more). She is a bit of a snake in the grass because the finish hides the chambered black korina body but on the back the finish allows the black korina's grain to show through. I need to take pics of the back though.

Anyway, you clearly do great work. That SG is beautiful. I love the ZW fretboard. My guitars are Warmoths but I would love to have a handmade instrument made by somebody with your skills if I could ever afford it.

Thanks for your kind words - Nice axe you have there, please do take some more pics ,Don't know if I have mentioned it on here before but I have real trouble selling my guitars - everyone wants some well known brand and I usually struggle to cover what it costs in parts let alone my time ,I don't mind as I build for fun not for profit .I nearly gave up last year until I gave one of my guitars I shared on here to a professional touring guitarist and saw it live on stage................. \m/ 2015 F yeah \m/

Re: zebrawood fretboard on an SG style - Yeah or Nah ?

Ugh, I tried to take some here tonight but I really need to try again on a nice sunny day. It's too dark at night and I hate trying to use flash to compensate for low-light. Anyway, here are a few more from tonight:

Thanks! I love this guitar, she has been my main squeeze for about 8 years now.

That's a real shame man, your guitars are beautiful! Personally, I've had my love affairs with Fender and Gibson. They build nice guitars and basses but I have a thirst for the exotic. I currently only own Warmoths; 3 guitars and 1 bass. I have dreams of a swamp ash carved top LP dyed black and blue in the style of the old Gibson voodoo Les Paul attached to a wenge, bocote or some other mid to darker toned neck to balance out the swamp ash as my next guitar. I wish I could afford to hire you at the moment because you clearly do great work. Maybe someday.

That had to be a great feeling man, seeing the guitar you poured your sweat, blood, tears and soul into on stage. F yeah indeed. You shouldn't give up but I am sure it is tough at times. Such is the life of an artist. The more you get your work out there in view of people the better though.
