Zephyr Silver

Re: Zephyr Silver

Shows how much attention they paid to the original Thread/s. This was all elaborated on in the original threads about the Zephyrs.:banghead:

When I said "I want Zehpyr Seths for an LP", what I meant was, "I wish I weren't such a loser and had the money for Zephyr Seths, for an LP that I also don't have the money for."

Chillax, dawg.

Re: Zephyr Silver

All right, that tears it. I'm buying a spool of silver...

so my friend and i (and our poor significant others) stopped by the factory on a little road trip and evan and frank were cool enough to let us try out some guitars with zephyrs. you can read all about how the guitars were made which is very cool.

i tried the buckers first and was handed two guitars, one with zephyrs and the other with similar pups but copper wire. i wasnt told which was which, just to check em out and see what i thought. not sure which one i tried first but believe me when i say that it wasnt hard to pick which one was the zephyr loaded axe. the clarity and string to string definition was incredible. no more flubby open low e string. the note had shape, color, texture and punch like ive never heard from a neck humbucker. very tight and focused while still being immensely musical. it felt like a great pup through the amp, some how it was more aggressive when pushed hard but more refined than the copper version. the tone was wider but less cluttered or congested. if you suck, then these are not the pups for you cause they will show you how bad you suck. but if you have great hands these things will bring forth every nuance of your playing. i was blown away by that neck bucker compared to the copper. the bridge bucker and the strat pups had the same qualities. clear, open tones with beautiful harmonics.

i asked evan if i could have a set and he said no :(

Re: Zephyr Silver

The Silver Wire has less resistance per unit length. 4000 winds of Silver will have less resistance, or it requires more winds to reach the same resistance of copper wire. Of course it is going to sound different, in addition to the other changes, regardless of price.

Wire material
Use of copper is more or less universal for speaker wire; it has low resistance and less cost compared to other suitable materials. Copper and aluminum both oxidize, but oxides of copper are conductive, while those of aluminum are insulating. Also offered is OFC (Oxygen Free Copper). This cabling is really the process of removing oxygen and other impurities of this copper type that makes it better quality, longer lasting, less apt to corrode, and most importantly less resistance.

Silver has a slightly lower resistivity than copper, which allows a thinner wire to have the same resistance. Silver is expensive, so a copper wire with the same resistance costs considerably less. Silver tarnishes to form a thin surface layer of silver sulfide.

Gold has a higher resistivity than either copper or silver, but it does not oxidize, so it can be used for wire-end terminations. Suitably specified gold flashing has its uses for appropriate tasks, but in domestic use such flashing is not normally functional, for several reasons.

Re: Zephyr Silver

I suspect the electrical coil density, capacitance, inductance, resistance, transconductivity, Q value and frequency etc. are probably all altered just by the wire difference. ;)

Re: Zephyr Silver

"They can't possibly sound better than any quality production or custom shop model."

That's a quote from a previous post by someone.
I've heard the pickups only on YouTube and there is a clear difference. Not necessarily what everyone wants to hear, but a clear difference and the description comparing it to HD TV seems accurate to me. Anything further now that some have had more time to review these pups? I can only build (actually pay Fender to make) a custom strat once, and I want the absolute best parts used and on the guitar I intend to own until I die. :-) Why would I want any other pickups? Thanks for sharing your experiences and recommendations!

Re: Zephyr Silver

I'd love to try them before I'd even think of putting down that amount of money on pickups. I'd also be worried about no wax potting, because I hate squeal with a passion, and I like to open my pickups for various modifications. For the same money, I'd buy a sh*t-load of Duncans and a few CS models.

Re: Zephyr Silver

they don't squeal. period. I have stood in a room with a jcm800 with the master on 5 gain on 10... no squeal.

I have 2 sets and wish to upgrade all my main axes to zephyrs. they're that good.

Are you using the single coil or humbuckers............both?

Re: Zephyr Silver

No squeal on 10. Im not sure if I would like that I would want a little feed back enough to be musical with it.
