I had these same questions a while back, I went with my ears:

EVH Phaser over the MXR - the "Ed" button does a great VH1 phaser, it is a different sound

MXR Flanger over the EVH flanger - the "Ed" button is only a setting that can be done on the MXR as well.

I youtubed them and proguitar has good demos and it looked like the phaser def had a slower vibe in the script setting..

Can you recommend a good setting for the flanger and do you run it in front or in the loop?
