  • Which EL-84s for a Blues Jr?

The stock ones are getting old and I want to replace them. I'm looking for something that sounds a little bigger and overdrive a lot smoother. I would also like to at least MAINTAIN the current amount of headroom. More would be nice, but I don't want to distort any earlier. I looked into Gold Lions, but they seem a little pricey. Anything similar but cheaper?

    I like JJ's. A little thicker.

I've got JJ's in my JCA20H. I keep wondering about trying Mullard RI's, but then I realize I'd be replacing the power tubes for no reason.

Sovtek EL84M gives me 20% more clean headroom in my Marshall class 5. (single powertube)
            I use a JJ for AC/DC tones (JJ's sound a lot grittier/rougher in a C5).

No idea what they will do in pairs or in a Fender though.

I just picked up JJs for my Marsahl Class 5, and they sound pretty darn good. YMMV.

                  Howdy,

My friend, the days of chosing from the various quality American made tubes are looong gone, hah-hah. I use JJs for my Carmen Ghia most of the time. If Sovteks can be had on the cheap, I take them. Currently I'm running some NOS Sylvanias, but whether they'll prove to be worth the extra $ remains to be seen. Good luck.

Sovtek EL84M = ~€12.- (not sure about U.S. prices though, but they must be cheap)
