Re: what's your favorite power tube type for tone?

I have to say that my favorite sound was with a Marshall with KT66 tubes.

I also like the tone from my amp with 6L6 tubes, and my amp with EL84s.

A have another amp that uses both EL84s and 6V6s, but I prefer the extra presence from the EL84s.

Right now, a mix of EL84 and EF86 (jumpering channels).

the lowly 6V6 just doesn't stand a chance around these parts! Long live the little molten bottle of all that is good and round and buttery in this world, the 6V6.

          That's how I feel about the EL84.

            I'm loving this thread.
I'm looking to tweak my Tweaker and any bottle that adds some upper mid grind and tightens the bass a bit is gonna be a winner.
I can drop every bottle on the poll minus the KT88s.

I absolutely love the 6V6 roar when pushing them hard though. Running them full tilt is just pure Rock and Roll bliss.
With the stock EHX 6V6 tubes it does some good Hard Rock sounds but it could be just a bit tighter and cleaner.
That's with a JB-8 on the bridge so the pickup's not to blame. It's goddamn tight as it is.

            Sounds like I want some EL34s, don't I?

                  EL34

In that order. But when I was playing through a Mesa Single Rect, an EL34 just sounded better to me. So it depends.
In BOTH or my Rectos, I prefered EL34 style tubes. The JJ KT77s were the balls in those amps.

I didn't like EL34's in my Recto. Although I'm wanting to stop using a boost with that amp, so I might try them again because the 6L6's in there now might be too tubby for the tone I'm after.

I see you have a single Rec. I had a Dual and Triple. Single might be a different beast. Ive never played one.

The Single is brighter and tighter, but not as wide or large sounding as the 100-150 watters. But not small sounding by any means. I like the touch and feel of the 50 too, more immediate and dynamic feel under your fingers if that makes sense.

I catch your drift. From the sounds of it, what you say makes perfect sense. The EL34s in the bigger recs. focus the tone more and bring the mids up a bit, where if it does the same in the single, it might be overkill. But the 6L6s in the Dual and Triple can make them TOO big and kinda tubby, where it helps widen the focus on the Single's tone.

Regardless, it looks like you got some killer hardware, dude.

That was my preference as well until I turned to the TigerSharc. I voted EL34 'cause it was the closest thing on the list.

Considering my amp at the moment has el34's, that's what my vote was for. But I also really really like 6V6's too..

I've tried several different tubes in my amp, 6500, 6l6, el34, 6v6, etc.

The 6v6 sounds the best. It sounds the best both clean and when breaking up.
