Assume that neither the price differential nor the space is a concern. Also assume that none of the options is likely to get gigged. Which would you pick just for the hell of it?

I always prefer head and cab. And I'm not sure anything over a 2x12 is really necessary. I think the 4x12 could be cool, but I also think it's probably overkill.

Me too, but that doesn't stop me wanting one

I own the head, you will love it! But if you don't plan on gigging, get the head + 2x12 cab, that way you have a little extra dough if you end up wanting to swap the speakers.

4x12 is fun, but it's unnecessary unless you gig to moderately large crowds. I have a 4x12, but a downside is that is really difficult to transport without a truck.

          Not gigging? Just the combo.

I voted for the head and combo, but I recommend getting the head with reverb.

Don't all the HT-20 heads have reverb? I thought it was just the HT-5 that had the option to go without.

I'm all about overkill. You know I'd have the 4x12. Right now my main practice rig is an HT-5 combo through a Marshall 1960A.

If not gigging, I would opt for the combo with no extension cab.

If gigging, I would opt for the combo with the 1x12 extension cab. It's the best option the way I see it, because you can choose to leave the separate cab at home if you want. Or you can use it with any extension cab along with the external speaker, or even unhook the internal speaker and use it as if it was a head in some cases.

I feel the same as you Chris...for the sake of harmony in the house and being sensible I'd go for the head and 2x12...

Why do I keep looking at 4x12 cabs for my JTM45???

                          Re: Blackstar selection dilemma

I own the HT20 combo and I love it. But sometimes I wish I bought the head plus cab instead of the combo.

I think the head + 212 cab is a better option. Just get better speakers for it and a tube swap when the stock tubes fail.

I'd go 4 x 12... I use one with my Tiny Terror... but it's there if my mates or I need another 4 x 12.
