Looking for a new amp : Any Suggestions?

Well, I've decided I really need to replace the 10W solid state with something bigger and with tubes in it. I'm really looking for the Marshall plexi overdrive a la Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, and Cream. I'm looking for an amp in the range of 15-30 watts. I'd prefer not to have to use pedals to get the overdrive sound I want, mainly just as a booster for solos if needed. I want to spend up to around 500-700 dollars on the amp. Thanks in advance!

Well I think you should look into a valtronix with 60 watts, those are killer. They have all of your little niftty gadgets intalled by Korg, & it is practiclly an amp with a modeler installed.It sounds cool. Or what i played & sounded really cool, was the kustom Wave, though its probably too big for you(120watts stereo)

It doesn't practically have modeling, it does have modeling i.e. it's a modeling amp.

Though I'm something of a tube snob, I don't think that tubes have a big tonal advantage over SS when it comes to dirt beyond mild overdrive. There are some exceptions to that but there are some damn fine SS/modeling amps if your primary interest is dirty tones.

I'd second the Valvetronix suggestion. Not only do modelers sound quite good (especially at parentally acceptable volume), they give you an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of various amps. You might be surprised at where your ear takes you.

Peavey Classic 30 and Crate Palomino V32 (or V16). My two absolute favorite "working-man" tube combos.

Two for Valvetronix, and two for the Classic 30. I know they don't make the Classic 30 anymore so I'll have to find one used, but thats not big deal. I'll try them out as soon as I can. In the mean time, more suggestions are always appreciated.

Actually they still make the Classic 30 and they even make a head version of it too...

the CrateV series i've heard good things about...

and the Traynor YCV40 & 50

They still make the classic 30, but if memory serves its made in china now, not america.

Marshall AVT is worth a look - it's a hybrid like the valvetronix and delivers killer tone - that big fat marshall sound that only comes from um a marshall !

I don't mean to come off as harsh, but I can't honestly let someone recommend this amp with a good conscious.

As long as we've mentioned the Classic 30, don't forget the Peavey Classic 50, 2x12 combo. It should be in your price range. Clumsier to carry around, but compared to the Classic 30, but the 2x12 speaker format moves more air. If you think you may be playing larger rooms, it is nice to move air. Of course, you can always mic the 1x12 30...actually, as Hoss mentioned above, the 30 comes in a head version. That way you can use different speaker formats, as dictated by the room that you're playing.

I wanna put in my 2 cents also. You say you want Marshall tones and have a budget of $500-$700. The Traynor YCV50Blue fits that description. A big plus is the master volume-sounds great at low volume. Comes with a Celestion Vintage 30 so no need to upgrade the speaker. I would upgrade the preamp tubes though but that's only gonna be $25-$50 depending what you get. I have a GT12AX7-M in V1, a JJECC83s in V2 and a GT12AX7-C in the PI slot and this amp kills!
