PoD xt live OMG!

well i went out last friday to a local club and they had a live band playing covers, so i got closer to check out the guitarist rig 'cause it sounded pretty sick, well the guy was playing thru a pod live straight to the mixer (PA) , i swear it souded better than my freakin mesa recto , and then last night i went to cheers and they had a live band and the guy was playing thru a boss gt8 and it sounded better than my amp (straight to the pa too) so whats the deal with this things?? any comments! i wanna buy one but do i need to buy a PA? thanks! BTW they were loud!

Re: PoD xt live OMG!

No PA is needed. You can run them into an amp head + cab (keep the EQ flat and clean), power amp + cab, combo or PA.

Re: PoD xt live OMG!

well, you lose a lot of the character that the amp and cab sims impart to the sound...you wind up not using half of the machine. it is designed to be plugged into a clean full range power source, like a PA, Keyboard or acoustic amp...or direct to a computer for recording. Yeah, it will *work* through a normal guitar amp, but any guitar amp will seriously compromise what amp modelers can do.

OMG LOLz BRB TTYL!!!!!!

seriously though, i had one and they leave much to be desired. At first it was cool, but that overly stale tightness gets old after awhile, even if it does have a million tricks

but i mean if it's your thing go for it

Re: PoD xt live OMG!

They're excellent tools. Typically they will reqire a certain amount of time invested in them to get them to sound the way you want, but for what you get out of most folsk feel it's worth it.

I have a PODxt which I really like. I enjoy the versatility of it, the ability to go real deep in it with the USB interface and to be able to tweak and have a blast creating and making new sounds.

Depending on the band I was in I might gig with it. I'd definetley grab it as a back up for my amp in other settings.

Agreed. Be prepared to sit down for an hour or more and really tweak settings.

Re: PoD xt live OMG!

Your Recto should be owning it. Again, I think you have something setup horribly wrong.

what can it be? cheap cables? i just replaced the 5 pre amp tubes with jj's and it seems like it sounds worst! and sounds better at lower volumes, i crank it and sounds like ****! im tired of tube amps not sounding how i want em to sound! BTW whats a line6 combo that has the pod integrated to it?

Re: PoD xt live OMG!

Well you might just be hearing the 20-20khz range of sounds that a lot of those units can produce which give you a huge bandwidth of sound. You might like that range of sound as opposed to a typical guitar amp that doesn't come close to that. Thats why they are plugged in to a PA, keyboard amp, or studio monitors that can handle that frequency response.

Re: PoD xt live OMG!

PODs are very cool for recording, and they do sound great when listening to someone else play them. However, at least IMO, they don't have the "feel" I look for when actually playing through a rig at gig volumes. That's when a tube amp is at it's best, and though I liked several features about my rig when it was a PODxt Pro based rack setup, I liked it more once I switched to a Mesa Rectoverb (and even more when I ditched the Recto for a VHT Pitbull 45 :D ).

What is it about the sound you don't like? It could just be that you don't like the Mesa flavor, I got rid of my Rectoverb because there was a fuzz to the notes I just couldn't dial out. No matter what it always sounded buzzy even after tube swaps, etc.

no its not about the flavor, let me give a an example: when i crank it sounds like a cheap crate solid state amp

Well typical guitar amps only emit sounds from say 50hz - 7Khz.

Alot of modelers are capable of producing sounds through the entire hearing spectrum 20hz - 20khz.

I hope thats somewhat clearer. Its all the same reason why you don't play a keyboard through a guitar amp, cause you need full frequency response.

What power tubes are you running, and what settings?

My guess from this description is that your preamp gain is up way too high, what do your EQ settings look like? I usually have bass about noon or below, mids and treble between 2 - 4 o'clock to taste (usually have mids just a tad higher), gain around noon to 1 o'clock. Note, that will sound better with a band than it might in your room.

Re: PoD xt live OMG!

You could also be cranking the channel volume as opposed to the master.

As for EQ's, my standard was always gain at 1:00, lows at 11:30, mids at 10:30, highs at about 2-2:30, presence at 0. Sometimes, highs and presence at noon, but the presence off really tightens things up.

Yep, cranking the channel volume will do nothing but add preamp gain, master is where it's at for pushing the power tubes.

i have a set of jj 6l6 and a set of mesa 6l6 , the jj sound better, output is about 9 o'clock, volume at taste , presence at 10 o' clock, mids at 8 oclock, bass at noon, gain at 2 o clock, treble like at 2 o'clock
