I don't really have GAS for any guitar now since I got my Jackson DK2M, but I have a feeling I'm gonna want something like this at some point.
Anyone got one? Know anything about them?
What would be a cheaper, import model?

And where can I get a velvet suit like his?

Thats a Hamer Sunburst...they still make several guitars that are the same and similar.

I'd LOVE to have an older (like Martin's) sunburst...in fat there is one for sale on TGP right now but they go for too much cash IMO these days.

Do they all have the big headstock? It looks out of proportion to me. And are they all archtop?

And, for some reason, I thought Martin's was just plain black, not sunburst. You can see it (or one like it) in action here, this is a totally awesome performance BTW, especially by Martin.

used Studios or Studio Customs are pretty affordable ... even moreso the flat topped Specials

I'm in the UK remember, it sucks trying to get good guitars for a decent price over here.

I have a feeling the one Martin played wasn't an archtop, what d'you think?

I can't tell from the pics ... but I'm sure there's info on The Hamer Fan forum, or whatever it's called.

I have no idea what the used market is like now, but I was just pointing out that you should investigate that, since used ones don't depreciate, and new foreign models will.

They have a standard Hamer headstock, and it's not big by any means...

NONE of the 70's and 80's Sunburst guitars had an arch top...all flat tops...

Sunburst was the model, not the colour...Sunburst models came in several colours...including a Sunburst, and yes that one is black...

Nope...Martin had more than one but they were all from the 70's/80's and were all flat tops...all of them were.

Re: Anyone got a Hamer like Martin Barre's?

Good stuff guys, thanks!

Does anyone here actually OWN anything like this?

Re: Anyone got a Hamer like Martin Barre's?

Lew owned a Sunburst that he sold a couple of years ago.

BluesNMettle had a couple Specials, and sold one recently.

I have a Studio, a plain dot neck - it's on my site somewhere. That has the stock '59/ JB, but I'd like to switch the bridge for a '59 or a Brobucker.

I know there are a few others.

Re: Anyone got a Hamer like Martin Barre's?

Looks like Hamer don't make flat-tops anything like what Martin played any more. Certainly not in the XT price bracket.
So I'm not gonna be getting one any time soon.
The GAS has been turned off.

Why don't they make flat-tops any more? Why bother doing PRS type archtops when the market's been sewn up by PRS? Surely a flat-top would be cheaper to make?

Archtop = more wood, more warmth & sustain. I like archtops.

Re: Anyone got a Hamer like Martin Barre's?

No flat top Sunburst model in the lineup at present. I own a '79 Sunburst. Nice guitar. Mine has a slimish C neck profile with a really tasty looking Brazillian Rosewood board. It is a one piece Honduran Mahogany body. Here are a couple shots with my '79 Standard.

There is a NICE Natural finished Sunburst f/s on the Hamer Fan Club board.

Re: Anyone got a Hamer like Martin Barre's?

hamers are amazing guitars for the money; the build quality on them is superb and they capture that 'vintage yet modern' kind of vibe very well
i have an artist with seth's and a standard and the attention to detail on them makes my gibsons look like 300 dollar Corts!

btw BTMN....the standard and sunburst looking freakin' amazing!

Re: Anyone got a Hamer like Martin Barre's?

i think i should get into this discussion. I had various Hamers, but i'm on Gibsons for about 2 years now. There is just one guitar left: a 79 Special (first year), a cosmetically stripped down Sunburst. Flat top, one piece body, 3 piece neck and a flame veneer. Great bang for the money! Better than any Gibson LP Specials i played.
