  • Fretboard oil?

Is one better than another? I'm going to change strings tomorrow, and I figure I'll pick some up before I do it, but I'd like to know exactly what I'm doing first.

    Sperm oil? ..

..get your head out of the gutter..I mean sperm whale oil. Very rare and expensive.

      I use WD-40.

      ....but I have graphite necks.

Used to use the dunlop kind and it worked quite well.

Best stuff on the market is Fret Doctor. You won't find it locally though.

I use old english lemon oil to clean fretboards. Never had a problem, but some people claim it actually dries out your fretboard. Never seen that happen and I oiled my epiphone's fretboard fairly liberally every 4 or 5 months (dry climate), and never had any problems. it's cheap stuff, too. I've had the same bottle for 2 years and have barely used an eighth of it.

              This...

Just stop reading now, and order some. No, whatever you are now thinking is "just as good", is not.

Fret Doctor is basically Bore Oil...

I still use Fret Doctor (only because it last so long), but some sort of Bore Oil is what you want.

I use Orange Oil. Works great and I swear it looks like it gives the maple wood neck an amber tint.

I use the Dunlop cleaner prep and oil conditioner. Been using it for several years and it works easily and well. In the future I may look for something else, but it's worked for me all these years nonetheless.

I was talking about the back of the neck, which is maple.

                            Re: Fretboard oil?

I've actually used extra virgin olive oil on my strat's rosewood fretboard...rubbed in with my finger.

It actually felt nicer to play on, and didn't dry out my board as much as lemon oil did.

IMHO, nothing beats unboiled linseed oil. I've used this stuff for years and it always works great.

It's what Dan earliwine recommends too (if that holds any value to anyone here)...
