  • Fitting a pickguard to my strat copy

Check out the pic, I've got a pickguard that needs about 1/2 inch trimmed out of the neck slot. I don't have a lot of fancy tools laying around, what do you suppose is the best way to do this?

    What tools do you have?

Hmm, well I basically have everything except for woodworking stuff which is probably what I need to do this. I'm sure it would be a piece of cake with a dremel tool. Any cheaper suggestions?

Like running an exacto knife over and over again on it

Nice, I guess if I just clamp the pickguard and run that over it it will do the trick. I think this is my solution unless there are other suggestions.

I got a pickguard from GFS
and had to whittle out the same spot

              I used a utility knife

then waved a soldering iron over the cut area to "smooth" it out

Drill a bunch of small holes near the line you want to cut, snap out the waste material and tidy it up with a file and/or utility knife.

Ended up running utility knife then exact knife over it, broke it off with a pair of plyers, sanded it to shape, looks great!

There is protective plastic on it, so it looks weird but the work I did on the neck spot is actually really smooth. Now on to sticker removal and electronics.

Dremel Tool w/ Sandpaper Barrel attachment.

regular sandpaper when it gets to the tough spots. i routed the wood on my Aria Pro II for a backdoor and also shaped the door from a blank piece of pickguard material with just the Dremmel. no sandpaper needed. but get one with two speeds ''cause sometimes one speed may be to fast.
