  • New beater guitar in the house....

Recently I got another Epi SG, a custom which by all accounts is a decent guitar which I love the look of (the head stock being the exception) but I don't like that middle pick up malarky. I've dropped the middle right down out of the way but I don't know, I'm just not getting on with it. However, for ages and ages I had been looking for a guitar made by UK luthiers Gordon Smith guitars. Finally I found an SG2 (SG shape obviously ha ha verry similar shape but with slightly different body contours although not too dissimilar), made in 1999 with 2 buckers, wrap around bridge with a nice cherry coloured semi satin finish. It has a few dings and dents on the body but the neck is excellent and most importantly it feels bloody marvelous! It's not neck heavy at all but has a real nice solid feel and balances perfectly. It needs the bridge adjusting as the intonation is not great (as you'd probably expect with a wrap around) and I'm going to look at a Tone Pros or even see if a PRS bridge will fit. Not really sure what it sounds like yet, it came with the stock pick ups but I don't know anything about them. I do however have a Brobucker for the bridge and either an AP2 or Seth bridge for the neck. Although it's a beater at the minute I would love to have it refinished in gold or maybe bronze like some of the '52 Tele reissues from a few years back.... we'll see. Got no pics yet but will post when I've cleaned it up.

GSGs can be awesome guitars after a bit of work.

They're not overly flashy looking, but are great workhorse guitars

I have clicked on this thread, but I see no pictures of a guitar.

Surely there is a problem with the forum software, will report to the mods.

I suspected from the opening post that thsi guitar was too good to be considered a 'beater' and the pics confirm it. A little bit of TLC to make it your own and it should be something quite special.

That does look like a fun guitar to do a refinishing job on, not that it looks bad as is.

That's cool. Doesn't look like a beater to me. Rock that suckuh!

Those guitars are awesome. There's frequently a lefty GSG Les Paul Jr. style thing on Ebay that taunts me to no end.

I've never really liked the look of SGs without a scratchplate, but that looks pretty cool. I like those black covers on the pickups.

                          Congrats, lad.

Something else I forgot to mention:

If it's still the stock wiring and pickups then the electronics will have 2 push/pulls for coil splitting, a treble bleed mod on the tone pots (so that they're out of the circuit when tone is at 10) and the pickups will be ceramic mag 1s
