Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

All true :) I wouldn't need to sell it if i bought it from the store for sure, because i wouldn't bring it home to start with. Thanks for the advice :)

Well, except...

I spent much of the 80ties in music stores testing guitars.

I didn't find that playing them in a store significantly raises the keeper rate compared to flipping on forums and ebay. There is something about going to a guitar shop after work that distorts your senses.

Just did a search on the bay for STudio 2010 and 2011. SOme choice looking items.

The right pickups will make any of them sing.

I suppose a weekend is better ;) hahah

I've never bought a guitar and later sold it..except for my classical. Classical guitar killed my want to play. Got rid of that demon and never looked back.

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

I dont know many that would choose a LP studio over a LP standard or custom if money was no object ;)

I know each guitar is different and you can't really give an opinion without playing it.
However, I was looking for opinions on this new model in general. Hoping to get some insight from a few people around here who may have had their hands on one.

I think that goes without saying but price is a factor here.
I am going to need to go back and check it out. The guy was showing me the new marshall amps he just got in. Try that out also!

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

Best thing is to try em. as prev said.. I wanted a black trad pro. I played a couple that were really amazing and I liked the features/pricepoint. When I went to buy, I played the couple of black ones in the store and thought meh... So, I plugged up the wine red one they had, just for comparo, thinking maybe it was just the model of guitar that I wasnt gelling with. The wine red one sustained much better, sounded great and just felt special.. I wanted black.... Few days went by and couldnt get the red one outta my mind.. went back and played it again and was ticked cuz it had some scuffs on it, but I had to buy it.. It just had da mojo... A set of Duncan pearly gates later, and she really has da mojo!!!!

I SOOOOOOO would love to have that Inverness green with a set of Cream Prails.

And as with any LP of any year - play it to find out. They will all likely be decent. If they are are great or worth the money, only YOU can know that.

+100. Cream P-Rails would be so awesome on that guitar.

I'd take a Studio any day. Mainly because I soooo hate Gibson's neck binding. Much prefer Epi binding or no binding at all. Studio all the way.

Plus...at half the price, it's a no-brainer.

Wht do you dislike about the neck binding thats better on an epi? The one thing I dont care for is the pinkish cream color they are using now..

Yeah, I was going to say, well yeah, everybody most likely, would take a Standard over a Studio..but just because it is worth more, is dolled up more........but they sound the same to me. I have had them both, and still have a Studio...but I got a DEAL on the Studio, brand new. I don't think I would pay for more than a studio these days.......if you get famous they will GIVE you anything you want SO.... "Why Worry"??? hahahahaha!

It's gotta be the nibs for the frets that he is talking about.

I don't mind it either way. If the nibs catch the strings when doing pulloffs on the high E (the only time I can imagine it being an issue), then it is very easy and quick to fix with an emery board. I find most Gibsons need fretwork from the factory anyhow (and touchup on the nibs), though I must say that the new PLEK seems to be helping a lot with that. The one benefit of Gibson's lazy fretwork, however, is that the frets come to you boxy enough that you can have them crowned to taste.

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

I'd like if the granadillo fretboard was darker (im not sure if Fret Dr. or Lemon Oil work the same, i assume they do) but they look awesome !! I'm in love with the inverness green finish and hopefully will play one in the near future to see how they are!

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

I find that sometimes there is a slight gap between the fret end and the binding which catches the high "E" string. Even a crown job won't get rid of the gap. On Epi's, the top of the frets go all the way across the fretboard, on TOP of the binding. No need to worry about any gap catching the string.

My LP Studio Pro Plus plays like a dream. After a pickup swap it sounds as awesome as she looks!

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

A sure way to spot a refret on a bound finger board it the missing nibs of the binding. Buyer complains about that alot. As far as the LP Studio I think Gibson did a good job with it, some other ripoff models from other companies try but can't do what Gibson is doing..
