I have been considering a Gibson LP studio for awhile and had a chance to check out one of the 2012 LP studios in the local shop. Only had a chance to look, not play. They have a very nice look to them but I was wondering what are the opinions of people around here that have actually tried them?

Do they have that magic?

It varies guitar to guitar. We can't tell you if it is good. I'd go back and play it and see if you like it.

Gotta go back and give her a go. She could be a beauty, but she could be a dog. Never know till u give her a go

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

When I got my Trad+ a short time ago it was a choice of 3 (being lefty thats about how many were in the country at the time). The 3 were all 2012....a studio, the newer Standard and the Trad+. The latter only just won, mainly due to the fact that I already had a Studio and was looking for guitars with different constructions for subtle tone differences (swiss cheesed vs chambered, and the extra body thickness)

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

I have two 2011 LP Studios. Both are great guitars.
(Edit: I checked serial numbers and both were 2011's; I thought the one was a 2010)

With the 2012's, pay attention to the fret board. They are using all different kinds of woods for these now. Get one that you like the fret board on. Some woods feel and play different / better than others. For example, the baked maple seems dry and rough.

The studio is Granadillo

Fair to say that, like guitars in general, you'll find good and bad examples of all.

I'd like if the granadillo fretboard was darker (im not sure if Fret Dr. or Lemon Oil work the same, i assume they do) but they look awesome !! I'm in love with the inverness green finish and hopefully will play one in the near future to see how they are!

Coil taps are another plus for the 2012 models !

And the way the gold knobs accent the green is killer !!

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

I've been looking at these, too.

Say what you want. What is fundamentally a Les Paul for only $799 (in some cases) is a DEAL.

But yes, the fingerboards can be question marks.

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

I SOOOOOOO would love to have that Inverness green with a set of Cream Prails.

And as with any LP of any year - play it to find out. They will all likely be decent. If they are are great or worth the money, only YOU can know that.

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

These LP's new are about 1250-1300 new from the few music stores I saw online. I'm gonna shoot for this one, i just got a new job so the money should be easier to obtain. I wouldn't swap pups or change anything, they are amazing to me!

I played the faded blue lp studio with the 50's neck and I don't mind the 'baseball bat' neck at all ! I actually sort of like it, i need to try the 60's as well to see the difference.

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

Studios have (after the Faded series) the most guitar-to-guitar differences in the Gibson lineup.

There are some really nice pieces in there, and quite a few dullsters.

I would say that on the balance of things, given $1200 in cash and the desire to get a well-playing and well-sounding LP it is a valid strategy to play as many in shops, as opposed to trying your luck on used classics and the like. You'll take a big hit on the resell, of course. But the point would be to get a guitar that doesn't "need" reselling.

All true :) I wouldn't need to sell it if i bought it from the store for sure, because i wouldn't bring it home to start with. Thanks for the advice :)

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

I don't know. Why buy knew? I see mint used Studios that are only a few years old and have the rosewood f-boards pretty often at GC going for +- $800.

Re: Opinions on the 2012 Gibson LP Studios?

No doubt quite a few people get the Studio as a temprary GAS-stop on their way to a Standard or Custom...and it doesn't help. So you will see some very nice studios for a great price.

Studio - It's everything you NEED in a Les Paul.
