It looked to me they were better suited for lighter styles of rock, they look too thin to work for heavier types of metal.

Forget wood. How about granite? One solid piece, just frets and tuning machines made of metal, oh and the electronics. Even have the bridge carved out of the stone. Now that would be heavy.

I just use carpet. Lay em down yourself and you'll never risk breaking a neck from falling off your tone-tuned stand.

That gives me an idea! Carpet straps! All the durability of synthetic straps with the tone of natural animal fur!
