Re: What the hell happened, Guitar Center???
I visit any guitar stores I come across when I visit the US. July/August last year I stopped in at the GC stores in Seattle (the one up near Amazon), Memphis, and Lakeland FL. I bought a good mic and a tremolo pedal at Lakeland, but just some other random strings/picks/etc at the others. i found them all to have a decent selection and the staff were all friendly and helpful to me.
A few years back I visited Brian's Guitars in Cheshire, CT - those guys were great. Just recently I visited a few stores on Oahu HI as well - some great stores and great guys in there too.
I try to always buy something in each store, especially the smaller (non-chain) stores. If for no other reason but to keep a few bucks moving through the doors of some places I like to visit, and help keep the honest guys open for business.
Here in Australia, the only stores left are the small guys who buy and sell used gear, and typically have a section of that market that they specialise in (ie, Japanese made gear, or vintage Fender/Gibson). I do love these stores, some great ones here in Sydney and in Melbourne, but if I were looking for new guitars or amps there really aren't many (any) stores left that sell them.
