Both my Steinberger and my Brian Moore has the jack placement recessed on the back of the guitar. That is the best I've found so far.

Sounds awesome, I'd love to experience either of those guitars.

As far as ergonomics goes, they rock. But I understand that LPs, Strats and Teles are bound by tradition. Other models that aren't have no excuse not to re-design the jack placement.

Imo it's all about ergonomics. Why would you want to strap something on that isn't comfortable?
