  • mxr carbon copy question

My new toy came in the mail yesterday!! I have a question tho.. What is the Mod button supposed to do?
Yes, I read the directions and it says it is supposed to toggle modulation off and on.. ( so no wisecracks there guys.. haha) But.. A) what change is the modulation supposed to make in the tone? I cant hear any difference whether the button in pushed or not. B) it says there are trim pots to adjust it. Have you users found any good settings with those? I really cant hear a diff, so Im wondering if its broken (light works) or if its just so subtle that my ears dont catch it. Im going to try with a real amp and more volume today. Thanks for your help!
Believe me when I say that some of the most amazing music in history was made on equipment that's not as good as what you own right now.

It is a subtle chorus effect, mine from the factory was pretty noticeable, but maybe the ship with the trim adjusted different now?

      Re: mxr carbon copy question

The modulation is a chorus effect only on the repeats. So to hear it well, set it for a longer feedback and a higher mix. I haven't opened mine up since I got it to adjust the trim pots, but mine came stock with some pretty wild settings. The mod effect was set too deep and too fast for my liking. Yours may have been set more comservatively. I have the depth pretty low (9 or 10 o'clock) and the rate around half. This way with long delay settings I get a slight chorus detuned effect, and it's almost unnoticeable with shorter repeats. I also notice that without the mod engaged, the overall tone is slightly brighter and the repeats are a tad cleaner. Good luck with it!

To echo Nacho, set your mix to full, delay time to max, repeats to many, then strum a strong chord for a second and mute. (Basically you want to hear just the repeats) As stated above you should hear a chorusing warble on the repeats. If you bought secondhand, the previous owners certainly could have dialed it back to lower settings.

It's a really awesome option for chordal playing, just a beautiful swirling underneath your direct signal.

Take the back off & there will be two knobs or dials, turn those and it will change how much effect the MOD button gives you? It can go from hardly noticeable to something hardly useable!!! You'll notice it, trust me! Anyone wanna buy one? NIB, $90 Shipped???? Thought I'd toss that in?

I have owned a Carbon Copy since their initial launch and have never really dug too deep into the mod function. Is it supposed to simulate properties of tape delay? I never really noticed much change even when messing with the trim knob so I eventually just left it alone. I love the pedal to death, regardless

Yea, honestly the Mod function sucks, well I guess it's alright but it takes a while to dial in any kind of useable Modulation & taking the back on & off is a PIA! Once you find a sound you like you either have to keep it that way or it's gone forever, its really hard to re-find your setting spots unless you mark the back dials? If I were you I'd just use it as a Analog delay! That's where it shines, I love this pedal, especially for clean tones or with light O.D. on top? To me the Mod button is more of a gimmick than anything? Just my two cents though???

I've seen several Carbon Copy pedals rehoused to put the mod controls on the outside of the case.

I just want it to go off with the footswitch.

When I had one, I never used the mod on the delays. Having a seperate chorus is always better IMO.

V1 came with a lower modulation, v2 is more pronounced. Check your serial number, there's info on the Web when the value changed.

I set the mod controls both at about 1/4. Not chorusy, but adds a little warble to the repeats somewhat like a tape delay.

                          Re: mxr carbon copy question

Hi Guys, I've been messing around with my CC lately trying to get some U2 sounds out of it.

Mine came with the speed set to slow and when I turned the modulation "on" it sounded out of tune.

Didn't care for that, so I took the back off and advanced the speed all the way up and it sounded much better.

It sounds good now, but if I reduce the speed more than a little it starts sounding out of tune again quickly.

So for me, advancing both controls to full and then backing off a little, especially on the width, seems to be the ticket.

It's a more subtle chorus effect than my old Boss CE2.

Usually I'll set the CC for delay only (no modulation) and add the CE2 when I want to add chorus.

But sometimes I prefer the more subtle chorus on the CC...especially now that it doesn't sound so out of tune.

Maybe its because your used to the 'precision' of a digital delay? Personally I hate the sound of repeats being the exact same, I like the roll off analogue gives you on repeats.
