Wiring a Danelectro in series?

I'm refitting a cheapie Danelectro RI. got a set of SD lipstick pu's on order. Got a quick question about wiring though...the originals had the two pu's wired in series with the neck pu reverse wound/rev polarity (the SD neck pu is RW/RP), so you get humbucking in the middle position.
I've heard you need an on-off-on toggle for this though and I can't find one...the switchcraft 3-way seems to be on-on-on.

Anyone know how to wire this thing up with the pu's in series?

just follow the stock wirimg. You won't have a series/parallel option though.

Re: Wiring a Danelectro in series?

Thats the problem... the stock wiring has disapeared... :friday:

You're right, that there's no good way to do it with an on-on-on switch. But I'm wondering what the stock Dano switch looks like. Any chance of posting a pic?

Re: Wiring a Danelectro in series?

Some fella sent me a picture of the stock wiring. I'll prepare a wiring diagram + actual picture for reference. There's no such thing on the net actually. It'll be helpful.

Re: Wiring a Danelectro in series?

You definitely need an on/off/on switch for series wiring, then you can follow the duosonic wiring if you're using a single vol and tone like me. None of the diagrams explain that the on/off/on switch is required. I just installed one yesterday to my original '61 DC that I converted to a 2 pickup model. The series wiring kicks but with these guitars and is the way to go in my opinion. I played it at a show last night and it was awesome. Still has all the funky twang you need but with more output and all the shrillness rolled off. You can get the switch at Radio Shack for around $4. Its an automotive type switch but the toggle looks right and its the right size for the hole. I read somewhere that this was the switch they used for the single pickup 3 tone option and because it was cheaper than an on/on/on type they just used the same switch for the 2 pu guitars thus the series wiring was a necessity to make this switch work.

Re: Wiring a Danelectro in series?

I've had a hell of a time with my 2 pup Dan. The switch was bad so I ordered a new one and duplicated the wiring. Each pup will now work by itself but I can't get the 2 together.
I opened both switches (old one and new) to be sure they were the same and they are.
I checked the wiring 10 times and stripped all parts and wired from scratch to be sure there was nothing wrong like a bad solder joint. Still no middle position.
I've never been so perplexed!
Not sure how to proceed!!!!

Try this wiring schematic; it worked for me (using a new Switchcraft 3-way switch following this diagram) with my 1990 (1st reissue) 59DC-12 string.Danelectro 59DC-12 wiring 001.jpg
