    Re: '78 or IM1?

One update from my side, I had the chance to try a'78 on my guitar (a friend of mine is selling it, so I installed it just to give it a try), I think I have to change my mind, the '78 is waaaaaay too trebly for my guitar.
Now waiting to try the custom custom.

Thanks everybody for all the suggestions!

That bright, spanky treble is what made early VH stand out, at least for me. Same thing with Slash's tone...it's known to be horrendously bright at lower volume levels, but fed through a hot amp pushing "10" (and a little studio processing come record time), it's hard to beat!

I personally think the only magic Templeman added is if you can prove the sound was so hard to record, he made it bearable. Otherwise, Eddie sounded louder and better as soon as he sneaked around Templeman (Fair Warning), or built his own studio (1984) side by side with early stuff, 1984 has crackling presence in the drums, vocals, and guitars; I think Eddie proved Templeman was in his way with slick studio gloss.

On VH1 and W&CF guitar tone, there is LOTS of noise competing to get in thru mics from all the speakers and gear he used.

On VH2 you get a glimpse of snappier clarity (like that which came later circa DDown, 84) because he plugged into only one stack, probably with his usual pedalboard (because his Marshalls had been stolen on tour). OutaLove is supposed to be a Destroyer, possibly Bottoms Up, but the solos with tremolo bar tricks of course are not.

My favorite VHlike pickup is the Super70, or any Alnico8 magnet in a PAF type hb.
It helps to build the bridge thats heavier than classic rock but more rounded character than heavy metal.

To the OOP, a maple neck is always a welcome treat for VH tonejunkies (like myself)
